UNITED STATES FRANCIS LYST, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 5,1904;- Serial No. 235.644.
Patented Dec. 17, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS LYsT, a subject of the King of England, residing at Lon don, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gas or like explosion engines provided with an additional recoil piston such as described in the specification of Patent No. 752,936 and my object is to provide means that will insure a super-progressive compression of the air buffer at'the recoil of the piston under the force of the explosion within the cylinder. I obtain this object by the means illustrated in the annexed drawing, which shows a longitudinal section of a gas engine with parts broken away, and to which I will more particularly refer hereinafter.
In my improved arrangement the recoil piston is held in its advanced position by a compound medium whose initial resistance is equal the full compression of the charge, so that the recoil piston shall remain stationary or practically so until the moment of the explosion. At that moment the recoil piston is driven back and produces a super-progressive compression of the air buffer by reason of the conicity of its chamber. To attain this result I provide a water-ehamber or water seal d immediately at the rear of the recoil-piston b which latter works with the engine piston c in the cylinder a. The water chamber opens into a conical air-chamber 6 provided with a safety valve h whose spring resistance is slightly above the force existing atthe moment of the explosion. The chamber e is further provided with a socket and tap as ordinarily constructed (not shown in the drawing) to which an air pump can be connected for the supply of the compressed air. Thus, by using a medium of low compressibility; such as water or oil, to act upon the air bufier within the conical chamber 6, I insure a rapidly increasing compression while, moreover, the escape of the compressed air is practically avoided.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
In an internal combustion engine, the combination with the cylinder, working piston, connecting rod, crank shaft and an air-cushioned recoil piston, of a water chamber to the rear of said recoil piston and a conical air chamber connected with said water chamber as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS LYST.
