To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, EDWIN E. SLICK, of
Pittsburg, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Rolling, of which the following is a f"ll, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is r diagrammatic plan view showing a rolling mill plant arranged in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic side'elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic side elevation of a modification; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a view showing the passes of one of the mills arranged for rolling small channels.
My invention relates to the rolling of metal, and more especially the rolling of small shapes such as angles, Ts, channels, &c., though it may be used for larger shapes such as rails, &c.
The object of'the invention is to increase the output and decrease the amount of hand labor in the rolling operation, and further to pfm'ide for a compact and easily operated ant.
I The main feature of my invention lies in passing the metal forward from one set of rolls to another in front of it, and bending the metal between the sets by a feed table.

Heretofore in rolling metal between sets of rolls in front of each other, the metal has followed a line of feed at right angles to the axes of the rolls and in line with the pass. I have found that I can feed the metal between the sets of rolls at an angle other than a right angle and bend the metal in its feed-- ing; and I can thus give the metal two passes in successive rolls without using mechanism for transferring it bodily sidewise.
In the drawing, referring to Figs. 1 and 2,
2, 2 and 2 represent two-high stands ofrolls in tandem and 3 another set of rolls in tandem therewith. These rolls are two-high and the metal may be fed from one to the other over rollers or through a suitable trough 4, as shown, by means of pinch rolls 5 driven through belt connections 6, or otherwise as desired. From the rolls 3, the trough 7 leads at an angle to the previous line of feed, to one pass of another set of rolls 8 which may be either two-high or three-high. In the form shown this set is three-high, and the metal enters an upper ass through the entering guides, and feeds orwardly upon a chute 9, its, rear end dropping down after the meta passes through the rolls. The metal is then passed back through a lower pass between the middle and lower rolls and feeds forwardly through a trough 10 in line with I this pass, to a set of rolls 1 1 which are shown as two-high. From this set of rolls 11 a Y- shaped switch 12 leads to another set of twohigh rolls 13 in line with the set 11, but at a lower level; this switch may be built in accordance with my Patent'No. 698,570, dated April 29, 1902. I have shown the metal as passing from the rolls 13 through a feed trough 14 having suitable driven pinch rolls 15, to the finishing set of rolls 16 which deliver upon the hot bed 17. I have also shown pinch rolls in the troughs 7 and 10 to assist in feeding the metal forwardly.
In using the mill the metal which has been somewhat reduced in previous sets of rolls feeds forward through the first sets of rolls, 2, 2, 2 and 3, and from the fourth set 3, is bent at an angleto the pass in feeding into and through the next trough or guide-way 7. From this trough or guide-way it is bent in entering the pass of the fifth set of rolls 8.
After passing through this set it is passed back through such set in its next pass, thence passes through the sixth set of rolls 11 and is passed back from these rolls into the seventh set 13, through the switch 12. From the seventh set it passes to the eighth and final set 16, from which it is received on the hot bed as a finished product.
In Fig. 3 in place ofthe two sets of rolls 11 and 13 I show a single stand of threehigh rolls 18 with an inclined trough 19. The metal entering this three-high set passes between the middle and upper rolls, moves up the trough and then dro s down and passes back between the mid 1e and lower rolls of the set, whence it passes on to the finishing set shown at '16 in Fig. 1.
The advantages of my invention result from bending .ofthe metal between two successive sets. of rolls, since this avoids the carrying bodily and sidewise of the rolled piece to bring t in line with the successive set. This gives a simple and compact arrangement, reduces the amount of labor and gives a rapid o eration.
i The set of ro ls having one line of feed at an angle to another may be either three-high or two-high and may have a repeater, and the same is the case for the next set to which the metal passes. The final set of rolls may feeding troughs, without departing from my mvention.
By the words plural pass set of rolls in the claims I mean any mill in which the metal passes back and forth therein for at least two passes.
*I claim 1. The combination with a set of rolls having back and forth passes, of two sets of rolls in front thereof and stag ered relatively to each other, and feed-tables extending from one of the two sets to the set of rolls having back and forth passes, and from the latter set of rolls back to the other of the two sets; substantially as described.
2. In a rolling mill plant, a set of rolls having back and forth passes, a set of rolls in front thereof, a feed-table extending from the front set of rolls to the set having back and forth passes, and a third set of rolls in front of and in line with one of the passes of the set of rolls having back and forth passes said third set beingat one side of the said feed table; substantially as described.
3. A series of sets of rolls arranged in tandem, another set of rolls beyond them and having back and forth passes, a feedtrough extending from the last set of rolls of the tandem mill to the set of rolls having back and'forth passes, said trough bein at an angle to the line of feed in the tan em mill, another set of rolls on the same side as the tandem mill, and a feed-table extending thereto from the set of rolls having back and forth passes; substantially as described.
4. The combination with a set of rolls having a plurality of back and forth passes, of two sets of rolls in front thereof, one of the latter sets being, in line with the set of rolls having back and forth passes,'and the other being out of alinement with the set of rolls having back and forth passes, and a bending guide extending between the non-alined set of rolls and the set having back and forth passes; substantially as described.
5. The combination with a three-high set of rolls having back and forth passes, of two sets of rolls in front thereof and staggered relatively to each other, and feed devices extending from one of the two sets to the threehigh 'set of rolls having back andforth passes and from the latter set of rolls back to the EDWIN E. SLICK.
