Applicatio'n flied May 20.1907. Serial No, 374.615.
To all 'whom it may concern.:
Be it known that l, BLERNT Hns'runss, citizen of the United States, residing at 1 Rockford, in the county of fspolrane and State of "Washington, have invented certain new and usefu im rovements 1n Fruit- Plckers; and I do dec are the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi the 1n- `Yrention, such'as will enable others skilled in invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangeA nient of parts, as will be more fully de scribed and particularly pointed out in the ap ended. claims.
n the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a eentrallongitudinal sectional view of my invention; Fig. 3 is a crosssectional View on the line 3 3 'of Fig. 2. Fig. Llis a detail view of a spring and plate forv closing the mouth of the lower chute section.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the pole of my improved fruit picker, which is provided near its lower end with a suitable The numeral 3 represents an extension rod whloh works in a corresponding socklet 4 in the upper part ol' said pole, and 1s provided at its extreme upper end with a pair lof soisn works between the arms or handles of said cutting members 6 and serves to normally hold the cutting blade 7 of the pivoted cutting member 6 away from the cutting blade ofthe stationary cutting member.
The numeral 10 represents a suitable liexi ble, which is attached at its upper end by suitable mea or handle oi' passes inwar y over a pulle 11 journaled in a suitable bearing 12, ixe near the outer end of the arm or handle of thestationary cutting member, and thence downwardly .ear. the outer end ci the arm e pivote'd cutting member,
through the eye of an ad'ustingguide-'screw 13 working in a longitu inal slot 14 inthe upper part of said pole 1. The lower end of said flexible v10 is provided with a number of loops 15 arranged at suitable distances apart.
and adapted to engage in the outer end ofan arm 16 extending at right angles fromrthe inner end ol" a turning member 17 joul'naled to a stub axle 18 extending outwardly from said ole 1 adjacent the lower end of lts longitudinal slot 14, said turning member terniinating atits outer end in a knob or handle 19, by means of which it may be easily turned. Said extension rod may be adjusted to different heights by pushing the same upwardly by means of said adjustin guide screw 13 and turning the body of sai( screw in one of' a number of corresponding notches 2() out in said pole at one side of said slot 14.
The numeral 21 represents a chute which is composed of a lower and upper chute section 22 Vand 23, respectively, said lower sec-' tion being arranged longitudinally of 'and se'- cured to said pole by one or more U-shapedv straps or plates 24, and said upper section being secured near the upper end of said eX- tension rod and adapted to work in said lower section. (See Fig. 2).
A band or ring 25 is secured around said lower chute section and is provided With'a suitable number of downwardly extending springs 26 adapted to pressin against the outer face ol said lower chute section and cheek the. fall of apples or other fruit when falling through the saine. A spring 27 is arranged in the lower end of said.lower chute section and has hinged to one side a transverse plato 28, the purposeof which will be shown.
In the operation of my invention the ex body of said adjustin T guide screw 1n one of the notches 20 of said pole, and the stem of the apple, pear, or other fruit to be picked inserted between the cutting blades 7 of said cutting member 6. The operator then takes hold of the knob or handle 19 of said turiiin member 17 and swings over the end of sai 111)v arm 16 downwardly, which ernn'through the and prevents'the extension rod 3 from felling end the minor details of construction may be Y resorted to without departing from the prin- Ueiple or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
. upper chute section sustained by the eXtenoperator press the-ends of seid spring 27 suf- ,'iciently outWerd-to allow seid plete 28 to "extension rod from saidpole it is only neces 'sary to, remove said retaining band -or ring 29.
