Description
UNITE JACOB A. SOMMERS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
OVERALLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application led August 22,1907. Serial No. 389,617.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that I, JACOB A. SoMMERs, citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to the improvement of overalls and the object of my invention is to provide overalls with an improved arrangement `of back and front extensions which may be readily attached to or detached from the waist-band. This object I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the upper portion of a pair of overalls looking toward the rear side thereof and showing my improved backand front extensions in place thereon, Fig. 2 is a detail view in elevation of the detached back extension, and, Fig. 3 iS a front view of the upper portion of a pair of overalls showing my improved front extension or bib partially disconnected therefrom.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 represents a portion of a pair of overalls which may be of the ordinary or well known make or construction.
2 represents my back extension with which is integrally formed diverging shoulder straps 3. As indicated in the drawing7 the rear or body portion of the back extension, flares toward its lower end and is provided in its wider portion with button holes which are indicated at 4, these button holes being designed to be engaged with correspondingly arranged buttons 5 sewed or otherwise secured to the waist-band of the garment on the rear side of the latter. From the upper portion of the back extension body 2 lead the diverging shoulder straps 3 which, as
shown, taper toward their lower ends and are provided with suitable button engaging terminations which are indicated at 6.
7 represents an overall front extension which as prescribed for the rear extension, is rovided in its lower and wider portion with utton holes 8 which are adapted to detachably engage buttons 9 sewed or otherwise secured to the` waist-band at the forward side of the garment. The upper end portion of the bib or front extension 7 is provided with buttons 10 which are arranged adjacent to the opposite edges of the bib and which are ada ted to be detachably engaged by the termina devices 6 of the shoulder straps 8. It is obvious that when this front extension or bib is not employed, the engaging devices may be connected with the buttons at the front of the overalls. n
Heretofore it has been common for manufacturers to produce and market overalls having permanent back extensions and bibs, these rear extensions being known to the trade as high backs, and the fact that there is a demand for overalls constructed both with and without the high backs7 and bibs necessitated the manufacture or the handling by dealers of both classes of garments. By my invention it will be readily seen that both the back extensions and bibs may be formed independently of the overalls and that in view of the fact that these extensions are readily attached to or detached from the waist-band of the garment, dealers will be able to carry a line of the back and front extensions separate from the overalls, thus admitting of their customers purchasing said overalls either with or without these extensions, and obviating the necessity of the overalls being manufactured in the different forms.
Thile I have described buttons as a means of connecting the back extension and bib with the overalls, it is obvious that other suitable and well known fastening devices may be employed. It will be observed that the central button 9, will be utilized for both attaching the bib and closing the `fly of the arment.
IVhat I claim, is:
In an attachment for overalls, the combination' with a pair of overalls having attaching devices arranged at the back and at the front of the waist-band thereof, of a back extension comprising a solid body-T portion and cut to form integral straps adapted to pass over the shoulders of the wearer, said straps having engaging means at their ends,
