Description

No. 871,843. PATENTED Nov; 26, 1907.
J. G. WIBSBN.
SCREEN FOR WINDOWS AND DOORS. APPLICATION FILED DE0.3,1906.
WITNESSES IN VENTOR- WWW ATTORNEYS JOHN G. WIESEN, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
SCREEN FOR WINDOWS AND DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application filed December 3, 1906. Serial 110.34 .6024.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. Wmsnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of iVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screens for Windows andlighted are free to escape therefrom as they instinctively attempt to do when the interior of a building 1s darkened.
The construction of my invention is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of my screen, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section drawn on line XX of Fig. 1.
Like parts are identified by the same reference letters in both views.
A represents the frame of the screen which is of the ordinary construction.
B represents the main screen which is preferably secured to the exterior surface of the frame and extends from the bottom bar (3 upward to within a short distance of the top bar D leaving a short unscreened space E across the upper end of the frame. The in ner surface of the frame is provided with a narrow strip of screen F which is attached at its upper edge to the upper bar D and extends downwardly past the upper edge of the front screen B and is secured to the lower side of the frame G which is preferably formed of tin or other sheet metal. From thence the screen extends upwardly along the surface of the metal frame G to a point near the upper edge of the front screen B terminating at a short distance therefrom, whereby an open space H is left between the upper edges of the front screen B and the angular screen K.
The metallic frame G is provided at its respective ends with supporting lugs I by which it is secured with tacks or nails to the sides J of the frame, while the upper edge of the metallic frame G is provided with a plurality of angular projections IJ which extend across the opening II and engage the upper edge of the front screen B. Thus the metal lie frame G serves as a support for the lower edges of the screen F and K as well as for the upper edges of said screen K and B, while open spaces are left between the angular projections L for the escape of flies or other insects from the interior to the exterior.
Experience has prox en that flies and similar insects when seeking the light from the interior of a room are inclined to move upwardly along the inner surface of the screen and in so doing upon screens of the construc tion shown they are free to pass out between the upper edges of the screen B and K.
Experience has also proven that such insects are not inclined to pass over the edge of a screen and downwardly through a small aperture as they would be compelled to do'to enter a room through the space between the upper edges of the screens B and K.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
In a device of the described class the combination of a suitable frame preferably of wood, a metallic frame secured at its respective ends to the opposing vertical sides of said first named frame and at an angle to the front and rear surfaces of said frame, a screen secured in close contact with one surface of said first named frame and extending from the lower bar thereof to a point below the upper bar, a second screen secured to the opposite side of said first named frame and extending from the upper bar of the first named frame to the lower edge of said metallic frame and a third screen extending from the lower edge of said metallic frame upwardly along the surface of and secured at its upper edge to the upper edge of said metallic frame and means for securing said metallic frame and screens at intervals to said first named screen, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN G. WIESEN.
