Description

To all whom 'it may concern:
1 S S} PATENT arms.
' GEORGE w. GENTIEU; or YPFIQIRIA, rumors.
Be it known thatI, GE'ORGEW. Gam -i a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and Stateof Illinois, have invented certain new and 'use- -ful Improvements in Explosives; and- I do hereby declare that'the o flowing is a full, clear, and exact description'o'f'the-invention, which will enable others skilled in the art-to which it appertainsto'niake and .use the same;
This invention relates to improvements'in' the manufacture of explosives, particularly set out herefnafter sium nitrate, fift T to that class of explosives which give off very little smokein burning, and consists in the combinationiof ingredients, as is more .fully tions may be varied somewhat for different uses,.as for example, when used in rifles the roportions here given are very. effective. V'hen used'in shot guns, the pro ortlons of potassium nitrate and hydro-cell ose would e diminished and the ammonium picrate and charcoal increased.

Application and ma 14.1w; sermrasoaaro.
. In preparing this powder, I first welgh out the-proper.jproportion of charcoal, hydro-cellulose and sulfur, which'being non-explosive, are finely pulverized together iira .bal trituratmgmachine. I The potassium nitrate mill or and ammonium picrate are ground or pulverized separately. 1 The materials being in a finely pulverized state-and the proper pro ortlon ofeach weighed out, the mixture is I lntroducedin any suitable incorporating maare usedffor black powder being suitable, and
the mixture incorporated until .a suitable chine, ordinary rolling or wheel mills such as owder isproduced, which is then placed in a ydrostatrc press and res'sed into cakes and these cakes are'then roken up and granulated in the same manner that ordinary black powder is made. After. granulation the powder is dried at a tem erature of from ninety to one hundred an twenty degrees Fahrenheit. 4
What I claim is: A compressed granular explosive consisting of an intimate mixture-ofammonium picrate 25%, otassium nitrate 52%, sulfur 10%, charcoa 3%, and h drocellulose 10%. In testimony whereof have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
