To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES F. HoBsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Helena, in the county of Napa and State oi California, have invented new and Iuseful Improvements in Saw-Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for sharpening saws. lts object is to provide a machine which will do this Work rapidly and eliciently; which will be adaptable to saws oi all sizes and of all varieties of teeth, and which particularly will be adjustable equally well to cross-cut and rip saws.
The invention consists oi the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line X-X, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on line 4 4, Fig. 1.
A represents a suitable supporting frame for the structure. This frame carries two reciprocating lile frames 2, each carrying a set of files 3, the number of files in each set corresponding to half the number of teeth in the saw. One set of `les is adapted to sharpen all the teethhaving their pitch in one direction and the other set of files to sharpen all the teeth pitched in the opposite direction: the two frames reciprocating in the same direction to permit the two sets of les to act alternately on the teeth.
Each le frame is in the form of a parallelogram having articulated or hinged sides and ends; the ends of each of these parallelogram frames sliding ina corresponding pair oi hinged guides 4. These iile frame guides4 are hinged or pivoted at their inner ends as at 5, near the center ol the support A there being a pair of these guides on each side of the center of the machine and the guides being connected together attheir outer kends by a link 6, so that the parallelism of the guides 4,
and consequently of the end members of a corresponding file frame, will be maintained. By having the frame guides jointed, and by making the file frames jointed in the manner shown, the files can be set at any angle 'with relation to the plane of the saw 7, so as to give any desired bevel to the teeth.
The positions of the iile frames and guides therefor are adjusted and ixedly maintained in any desired position by suitable means as the locking devices 8, carried by the file trame guides engaging with the lixedly supported slotted parts 9; the slots in the latter being concentric with the pivots 5.
The saw to be sharpened is supported in a suitable vise l0 arranged centrally of the machine and adapted to be adjusted vertically to bring the saw teeth into proper operative position with respect ,to the gangs of iiles 3. This saw-vise is more fully illustrated in F ig. 2, in which it isishown as arranged to slide in vertical fixed guides l1 and is supported by a bracket 12 on a. screw 13. This screw has a plain shaft portion suitably journaled in a fixed part of the frame A and carries on its lower end a beveled gear 1.4 meshed with a corresponding gear 15 on the adjusting rod 1.6. By means ot a hand-wheel 17 the rod 16 is turned to raise or lower the saw-vise in the desired inauner.
The vise is provided with sp1ing-grippingsides, which are drawn together to grip the saw by means of a hand-wheel 18. Any suitable form of power may be employed to give the proper reciprocatory motion to the file-frames and files.
1n the present instance I have shown each file frame as connected by a link 19 with corresponding disk 20 journaled on a vertical pivot. The underside of each disk has a beveled gear portion 2l meshing a corresponding gear 22 on a shaft 23; cach shaft 23 carries a gear 24; and these gears 24 are driven simultaneously in the same direction by engagement with a gear 25 on the operating shaft 26. ln the present instance I have shown a crank 27 for operating the drive shaft 2G.
ln operation the saw to be sharpened is placed in the vise and locked. The file-frames and guides and files are suitably adjusted so that the several files in each gang, will be in the proper position to cut the right bevel on the teeth. The inner side-bar of each file frame 2, that is that bar which carries the iles is removable to permit other bars having files or having file holding means adapted to receive files, suited for different kinds oi saws: saws having a greater or less number of teeth, or the teeth being of different pitch or bevel. The design of the present invention is to use as many iiles in the two gangs as there are teeth in the saw, so that all the teeth will practically be filed at one operation. Having adjusted the files and fileframes so that the files Will givethe desired bevel to the teeth, the file-frame guides are locked in position by the devices 8. The drive-shaft 26 is then set into motion and the saw is fed up to the files as fast as required by means of the hand-wheel 17 and its connections with the saw vise.
Having thus described my invention, what claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a saw-filing device, the combination of a suitable saw-support, two-jointed fleframes with {ile-holding means, cach of said fle-frames being substantially in the form of a parallelogram having its sides pivotally connected to its ends, one of said frames arranged on one side ot' the saw-support and the other frame arranged on the other side, adjustable guides in which the ends of said articulated saw-franies are slidably mounted, said guides being hinged at their inner ends and connected by links at their outer ends and provided with locking means, each articu- Q l h @70,883
lated saw-frame being angularly adjustable in unison with its guides, and means for reciprocating said file frames, said last-named means including a bevel gear mounted on a vertical axis beneath each saw-frame, a pitman connecting each gear and a respective frame, and driving-connections With said gears to impart an alternating reciprocating motion to said le frames, substantially as described.
2. In a saw-filing device, the combination with saw sharpening means, 0f a saw-vise vertically-slidable relative 1() thereto, a vbracket engaging said vise, a screw passing through the bracket and journaled in said support, a beveled gear fixed to the screw, and a journaled rod having a gear to mesh With the gear on the screw for vertically adjusting said vise.
