Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1907.
Application filed April 11, 1907. Serial No. 367,673.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENIS J. GYR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hugo, in the county of Washington, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clamps, and it has particular reference to a clamp including clamping jaws, and an adjustable follower coacting with said jaws, and designed to be set so as to take a new hold on the article to be clamped until the required degree of pressure is attained.
In connection with a clamp of the above type the invention aims as a primary object to provide a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of the clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation looking at what is arbitrarily termed the lower end of the clamp. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring specifically to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates what is arbitrarily termed the main bar. The bar 1 has a reduced threaded upper end 2 and along its body portion is provided with apertures 3 arranged at determinate inter vals. Upon the lower portion of the bar 1 is a clamp jaw l which is provided with registering slots 5, loosely surrounding said bar as a guide. A similar jaw 6 is provided upon the upper end of the bar 1, the jaw 6 being formed with a slot 7 surrounding said bar and with an opening 8 loosely surrounding the threaded end 2. A crank nut 9 works on the threaded end 2, and engages the jaw 6 as a follower.
In connection with the bar 1, a cooperating bar 10 is employed which has its lower end bent at a sub stantial right angle, and provided with a slot 11 loosely surrounding the bar 1. The bar 10 at its upper end carries a fixed jaw 12. Along the body portion of the bar 10 is a sliding jaw 13 having slots 14 loosely surrounding said bar. The bar 10 is provided with a plurality of apertures 15 arranged at the terminate intervals. In practical use the crank nut 9 is turned on the end of the threaded portion 2, and the jaw 6 is moved upwardly until it engages said crank nut. The cooperating bar 10 is then moved until the face of its jaw 12 coincides with the face of the jaw 6. In this position of the parts the apertures 3 and 15 register,
and a pin 16 is inserted through a selected pair of said apertures rearwardly of the jaws 4 and 13. The crank nut 9 is then rotated downwardly so as to feed the bars 1 and 10 in their connected relation upward. When the crank nut reaches the limit of its downward movement the work is held between the jaws 4 and 6, the pin 16 is then withdrawn from its aperture 15, and the bar 10 moved downwardly with relation to the bar 1, the jaw 13 being advanced by a single aperture, and fixed by a pin 17 so that the distance between the jaw 13 and jaw 12 is equal to the distance between jaws 4 and 6. Pin 16 is also engaged in the aperture 15. The jaw 6 is then moved upwardly and the material held between the jaws 12 and 13. The bar 10 is then moved upwardly by the distance between a single aperture, and coupled with the bar 1 by the pin 16 engaged in suitable registering apertures. The jaw 4 held by a pin 18 is then advanced until its face contacts with the material which is held between the jaws 12 and 13. The nut 9 is then rotated until the jaw 6 engages the material and coacts with the jaw 4 in exerting a greater pressure thereon during the last clamping operation.
This invention is especially useful in carpentering, cabinet making, blacksmithing and other trades. The jaws may be, adjusted on their respective bars to accommodate work of any size within the length of the jaws. In designating the construction and mode of operation it has been assumed that the jaws on the end of the bars are the upper jaws, while the adjustable jaws are spoken of as the lower jaws as though the device were to be used with the bars in upright position, but it should be understood that said bars may be placed horizontally or reversed in position from that described, so that the above mentioned lower jaws will become upper jaws and the upper the lower jaws.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and eflicient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the.
elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed, is:
l. A clamp comprising a bar having holes formed therethrough at intervals and provided on its upper end with a reduced screw-threaded portion, a crank nut on sai nd, adjustable jaws on said bar, one of which is adapted to be acted upon by said crank nut, combined with a co operating bar also having holes formed therethrough and having a sliding connection with the first-mentioned bar, a fixed jaw on the upper end of the latter bar, and an adjustable jaw thereon below the fixed jaw, and pins insertible through the holes in the bars for the Support of the lower adjustable jaws.
2. A clamp comprising a bar having holes formed there through at intervals, and provided on its upper end with a reduced screw-threaded portion, a crank nut on said end, adjustable jaws on said bar, one of which is adapted to beacted upon by said crank nut, combined with a cooperating bar also having holes formed therethrough, the lower end of the cooperating bar having a slotted angular end portion through which the first-mentioned b.r projects to afford a sliding connection between the two bars, a fixed jaw on the upper end of the latter bar, and an adjustable jaw thereon below the fixed jaw, and pins insertible through the holes in the bars for the support of the lower adjustable jaws.
