Description

No. 879,903. PATENTED FEB. 25, 1908. G. M. REDWAY.
TYPE WRITER CUSHION. AIQPLIOATION FILED FEB. 20, 1907.
(Q? If H F Attest: Inventor:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26,1908.
A lioatiun fil d February 20. 1907. Serial No. 358433.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGEM. REDWAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Cushions, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices adapted to act as cushions and vibration absorbers to be used with typewriters and similar machines.
The objects are, among others, to produce a simple and effective cushion device adapted to be placed under the feet of the machine, to absorb the vibration, thereby muffling the noise and making the operation of the said machine more agreeable to the operator and others, and also to provide means for securin the machine to the desk or table which wi 1 permit it to be easily and quickly attached and detached and securely held in position while attached.
To these ends the invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of (parts hereinafter described and claimed,- an
illustrated in the accompanying drawmgs.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cushion and securing means, showing detached portions of the typewriter and the top of the desk or table, embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan of the shell or casing of the cushion and fastener. Fig. 3 is a plan of the complete device with one of the rubber feet of the typewriter secured thereto. Fig. 4. is a side view of the part shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a vertical medial section of the com lete device.
A represents the top 0 the table, desk or other article on which the machine is supported.
B is the bottom of the typewriter frame, and C are the rubber feet of the said machine. The metallic desk D has a .iece of felt or other compressible material secured to its under side and extending beyond the periphery of the same, and these parts are secured to the rubber foot of the typewriter by means of a screw E passing through the felt and through the center of the disk into said foot This screw not only secures the parts together but acts as a stiffener for the foot and tends to prevent accidental detachment from the machine.
The disk and cushion are partly inclosed and held within a shell or casing H which consists of the bottom plate J secured .0 the top of the table by means of a screw 1, the vertical side piece K extending approximately half way around the same and the Cover G coextensive with the said side piece and extending u wardly to a point near the center of the shell. The cushion proper may be passed into the shell so that it is held against vertical movement by'the cover G and the bottom plate and in order to facilitate this, the inner edges of the cover are turned upwardly as shown at G. It will be observed that the felt or other substance F extends above the disk D and contacts with the under side of the cover G.
In applying the device to the typewriter the cushions are first secured to the feet of the machine in the manner described and the .shell H to the table-top. The shells are then placed so that the cover portions G are in the same relative position. This may be done by rotating them, if necessary, as it is in-' tended that the screw I shall permit this movement. The cushions are then passed into the shells or casings and one of the said shells rotated so that the said cushions cannot be removed, and in this manner the cushions and the machine are held securely in lace.
hat I claim is 1. In a device of the character described the combination of a cushion, means for securing the same to the machine, a shell or casing partly inclosing the cushion adapted to be secured to the table-top and to hold the said cushion against vertical and lateral movement. v a
'2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a cushion, means for securing the same to the machine, said cushion extending beyond the feet of the machine, a casing adapted to receive said cushion, means for movably securing the said casing to the table-top and a portion of said casing turned upwardly to facilitate the insertion of the cushion.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a cushion, said cushion extending beyond the feet of the machine, a casing adapted to receive said cushion means for movably securing the said casing to the table-top and a piece of metal for securing the cushion to the foot of the machine below the upper surface of a portion of the cushion.
4. In a device of the character described,
' foot of t the combination of a piece of compressible materialilnieans for securing the same to the another direction, the ositions to which the said holder is moved etermining the direction inwhich the compressible material may be moved. 4
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a cushion (plroper of compressible material, a metallic k within the side edges of the same secured to the cushion proper and to the machine a holder rotatably secured to the table or stand adapted to receive said cushion and disk and to prevent vertical movement of the same, whlle permitting lateral movement thereof in one direction' and preventing lateral movement in other directions.
6. The combination of a cushion proper composed of elastic material, a metallic plate secured to said cushion, said cushion having a portion above the metallic plate, means for securing the plate and cushlon to the machine, a portion of the cushion extending be-- yond the portion of the machine to which it is secured, a case or shell-adapted to partly inclose the said extending portion and normally out of contact with the said metallic plate, and means for securing the said shell to the desk or table top.
7. In a device of the character described the combination of a cushion, a connection between the said cushion and the frame of the machine,a metal casing receiving the e machine, a metallic holder'movsaid cushion movably secured to the desk or table top and partly, inclosing the cushion. 8. In a device of the character described the combination of a cushion, a connection between the same and the frame of .the machine, a metal piece adapted to be movably secured to the desk'or tab e top and to receive the cushion and to come in contact with the same on horizontal and vertical sides.
9. I In a device of the character described 1 the combination of a cushion, a connection between the said cushion and the frame of the machine, a metal part secured to the desk or table top and receiving the cushion in such a manner that it may be withdrawn therefrom by movement in one direction, the construction and arrangement of the parts being such that the metal part may be moved to different ositions relative to the cushion while hol ing the same.
10. The combination of a plurality of cushions, a comiection between each cushion and the frame of the machine, metal members adapted to be secured to the desk or table top and to receive a part of each cushion, the said cushions and metal members adapted to have'horizontal movement with reference to eachother for the urpose of separating the same, and also for 3w purpose of placing the said parts in position so that the separation of one cushion and metal member will be prevented by the others.
Witness my hand this 5th day of February, 1907, at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York.
