Description

PATENTED JAN. 2a, 1908.
C. L. HOLLAND.
BAR TRUMPET. APPLICATION FILED APR.30.107.
I I [AWE/Wok w 0% 4M By Al/omey CHARLES L. HOLLAND, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
EAR-TRUMPET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Application filed April 30, 1907. Serial No. 371.203.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. HOLLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear- Trumpets; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to ear trumpets adapted to be carried in a pocket and connected by a flexible tube to the ear of the user; and said invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the entire device and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the same.
A designates a substantially disk-form ear trumpet, provided with a tapering metallic outlet tube 13, a flat peripheral rim A and a number of holes a, these last being in one of its faces only and on the side of its center away from said outlet tube. The sides or faces of said trumpet are moderately convex giving it approximately the form of two saucers fastened edge to edge; and it may conveniently be manufactured by striking up two saucer like pieces of metal having flat rims at their edges and curvilinear recesses to receive the broader end of said outlet tube and suitably fastening these three parts together. The convexity of the sides allows room for a suflicient volume of air to insure transmission of sound, yet the thickness of the trumpet is not such as to be in convenient in a pocket. The holes a are sufficiently numerous and near together to freely admit sound, and the inner face of the trumpet will properly deflect and concentrate the same, discharging it distinctly through the said outlet tube, which effects, by its tapering structure, a further concentration.
C designates a bent metallic neck, fitting on the outer end of said outlet pipe and extending down outside of the pocket, where its outer end is coupled to a flexible tube D, having at its 11 per end a bent ear piece E adapted to be itted into the ear of its user.
The trumpet A may be extended by either hand or turned in any direction without removing the ear-piece, E from the wearers ear or turning it therein. Also the ear piece may be inserted in the ear before it has been taken out of the pocket. The interior of said trumpet is quite unobstructed and the sound escapes directly from the periphery. No additional parts are needed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An ear trumpet approximately of disk form and perforated on one side for the ad mission of sound, said trumpet being provided with an outlet from its periphery and having its interior unobstructed substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with an approximately disk form trumpet having a tapering outlet tube at one point of its periphery and provided in one side near the opposite part of its periphery with holes to admit sound, a bent neck fitted on said outlet, a flexible tube attached to said neck and an ear piece on the end of said tube substantially as set forth.
' In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES L. HOLLAND.
