RANGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application filed April 5.1906. Serial No. 310.160-
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. FULTON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ranges, and the objects of my invention are these; first, to arrange the parts of the back of the range so as to make them easily detachable, and second, to furnish a secure metallic seal for all joints between the back of the range and the said removable parts. These objects I have achieved by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the detachable parts of the back of the range, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the metallic seal showing its mode of insertion between the back plate of range and the detachable hood, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the parts of the range which lie immediately above said detachable hood, Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail elevation of the means employed to secure the hood to the back plate.
Similar numbers of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
I have shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 a means whereby the hood 20 at the base of the stove-pipe inner flange 17 may be made readily detachable. To the upper platX eX- tension 16 the flanges 34 of the bracket 21 are fastened by means of bolts 18 passing through said plate and the oval openings in the brackets. The flanges 38 are inclined downward toward the range, and furnish an inner space within which is mounted the damper 19. The flue of the range opens through the back plate 14 just below the damper 19, and consists of a removable box 20 provided with outer flanges 22, and whose upper edge flts over the lower edge of the bracket 21. To support the flue-box I or hood 20, I have provided a bracket 23 bolts 24. The lower edge of the flange 22 is caused to slide within the groove between the back plate 14 and the upturned edge of said bracket 23. The outer vertical edges of the flange 22 are rabbeted, and furnished with slots 27 to receive the fixed. staples 25, the latter fastened to the back plate 14 by means of bolts 26. The outer portions of the grooves or slots 27 pass entirely through the rabbeted thinner portion of the flanges 22 to permit the passage therethrough of the projecting middle portions of the staples 25, but the grooves 27 are continued inwardly into the thicker portion of the said flange and covered to clutch the inner ends of said staples. The swing-pins 29 are pivoted on bolts 28 to the back plate 14, and are curved downward and inward so that their inner ends may pass within and firmly contact with the inner sides of the staples 25, over the flange 22, when the grooves 27 of the latter are about said staples. The upper portion of the swing-pins 29 have a projection or finger-piece 36.
In order to secure a tight connection or joint between the inner edges of the hood 20 and the back plate 14, I have invented an improved metallic seal, consisting 'of a thin elastic metal plate or strip bent lengthwise so as to be folded into the parts or members 30, 37, 31 and 33. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the members 30 and 33 forming the outer portions are in the same plane, while the parts 31 and 37 are bent up into an acute angle between them. The inner edge of the member 30 is fastened to the back plate 14 by means of the bolts or rivets 32, the outer member 33 is left free so as to be grasped or engaged between the flange 22 and the back plate 14. When the flange 22 has been fastened to the back plate 14 by the means heretofore described, the free art 33 of the metallic seal is tightly engaged between the flange and the back plate, the bent up portions 31 and 37, by reason of their resiliency, causing the outer surface of the part 33 to closely contact with the corner of the flange 22 and the hood 20, forming an hermetically sealed joint. This form of joint is unharmed by the action of the heated gaseous unconsumed products of combustion, and effectually prevents their egress. As will be perceived, the hood 20 being easily removed and replaced, as shown, aids in the transportation of the range, through narrow openings or doorways.
The form of metallic seal I have shown, may be used on such other parts of the range as may be suitable, to prevent the egress of smoke or heated gases.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a range, the combination of a removable flue-hood having slotted flanges adapted to contact with said back-plate, staples fixed to said back-plate adapted to enter and project through the slots in said flanges, and proper means for causing said staples to removably secure said hood to said back-plate.
2. In a range, the combination of a backplate, a flue-hood removably connected to said back-plate, suitable means for supporting and removably connecting said flue-hood to said back-plate, and a resilient seal for the joint between said hood and back-plate composed of a bent strip one edge of which is fastened to the back-plate and the other edge free and clasped between the hood and the back-plate.
3. In a range, the combination of two overlapping plates, a resilient body having a middle longitudinal fold and outwardly bent edges, one of said edges secured to one plate edge of said body aflixed to and the other edge removably engaged between the same plate and the surface of the overlapping plate.
4. In combination With the back-plate of a range and a removable flue-hood whose forward edges are arranged to contact with said back-plate about its flue-opening, a resilient seal com osed of a body Whose longitudinal edges lie in the same plane with a longitudinal crimp between them, one said back-plate ed between said and the other edge clas said flue-hood to back-plate and the edge 0 form a seal between them.
5. In a range, the combination of its over lapping plates, a resilient strip having one longitudinal edge secured to one plate and 1ts other longitudinal edge clasped between said plate and the overlapping surface of the other plate, the free edge of said strlp adapted to bind against one of the angles of the edge of the latter plate.
Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 19th day of March 1906.
WILLIAM M. FULTON.
