JOHN ANTHONY, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAND BAG OR PURSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1908.
Application filed Ma ch 8 1907. Serial No. 361,294.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN AN'rnoNY, a citi zen of the United States, residing at littleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hand Bag or Purse; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved hand-bag or purse of the construction hereinalter described and claimed In the accompanying drawings,-Figurc l is partly an elevation, and partly a sectional view of a hand-bag or purse embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail transverse sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the stiilening bar.
The body 1 of my improved purse or hand bag is made of woven wire labric, ol any suitable metal, and if such fabric is made ol base metal, the same may be plated with a precious or non-corrodible metal, if preerred. At the mouth of the purse or handbag is a frame 2, composed of a pair of mem bers 3, hinged together, as at 4, and provided with the usual clasps 5. The body of the bag or purse is made of a single piece of material, and the bottom thereof is seamless. To keep the bag or purse in shape, I provide a still'en- 'ing bar 6, which is made of spring sheet metal, is of a length somewhat greater than that of the bottom of the bag or purse, is placed in the bottom of the bag or purse and has its ends pointed, as at 7, and inverted in the lower corners of the bag or purse, is
slightly bowed or curved upwardly in the i bottom of the bag or purse and is secured thereto at points intermediate its ends by headed studs 8. considerable breadth, so that it forms in ellect a false bottom that serves to support the weight of the contents of the bag or purse, relieves the bottom thereof of such weight, and prevents the bag or purse from losing its shape. Moreover, said sti'llening bar serves to keep the bag or purse in. shape when empty.
From the .l'oregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without rcquiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the l'orm, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as delined by the appended claims.
llaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is,-
A bag or purse composed of l'leXible material and having an elastic stillening bar in its gbottom, said bar having pointed ends engaged with the lower corners of the bag or purse, and fastening members tor securing the bar in place.
i l l In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence oi two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN ANTHONY.
