FIREPROOF WINDOW-SASH.
No. s76,113.
Specificaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
Application filed January 22. 1907. Serial No. 353.539.
T 0 all whom it may concerns Be it known that I, GEORGE M. VOLTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county ol Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Fireproof iVindow-Sash, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to sliding window sashes, though there are l`ea tures not necessarily limited to this particu` lar type.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and e'll'ective sash that will securely hold a window-pane, can be readily detached from and replaced in a 'indowframe, and will permit the ready removal and replacement of the glass, should the same become necessary or desirable.
The pre'ferred embodiment of theinvention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, whereinz- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the sash, showing the glass in place therein and said sash in a window. Fig'. 2 is a hori- Zontal sectional view theretl'rough.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the 'figures of the drawings.
ln the embodment set 'l orth, the walls defining' the sides of the window opening, are each provided with a guide member that is in the form of a channel iron 3, having one portion embedded in said wall, the other projecting' into the Window-opening, as dislosed in Fig. 2. The Window-sash includes side bars associated With these guide members. As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, each of the side bars comprises a partition Wall 4, from one side of which projects a longitudinally disposcd retaining plate 5, said plate being located along one margin ot' the Wall. From the opposite side of the partition Wall projects an outstanding longitudinally disposed guide lang'e 6 that is located along the opposte margin of the wall l to the plate 5. '.l.`he'guide llang'e (i is associated with one side of the guide member 3, and another flange 7 is associated with the opposite side of said member. The latter llang'e is detachably Secured to the partition wall by screws S or other suitable 'fast-eners. The spaced fianges 6 and 7 thus produce between them a guide-way that receives the guide member 3, as will be clear by reference to Fig. 2. Associated with the retaining plate 5, is a curved retaining plate 9, which is detachably Secured by screws 10 or other suitable fasteners to the edge of the wall 4 opposite that to which the llange 7 is Secured. The plates 5 and 9 clamp between them, a pane-receiving carrier tube 11 having a longitudinal slot 12, which is exposed between the inner ends of the plates 5 and 9, and receives the marginal portion of the window-pane 13.
It will be evident that this structure is very simple, and yet is entirely effective for the purpose described. In case, a pane is broken, the same may be removed and a new one placed in position by removing the retaining plate 9, whereupon the tube 11 can be detached and the glass placed in position, as will be evident. The plate 9 moi-cover constitutes means for contracting the carrier tube 11 upon the glass, so as to avoid all looseness and rattle. Moreover if it is desired to detach the sash from the window, it is only necessary to remove the flange 7, whereupon said sash can be swung laterally, as will be evident.
'From the foregoing, it is thought that the Construction, operation, and many advantages of the heroin described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of eonstruetion, may be rcsorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my nvention, what I claim as new, and desre to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a window structure of the character described, the combination with a sliding sash comprising a holdin frame including guiding means and spaced retaining plates, and a slotted pane-receiving carrier tube mounted in the holding 'rame between the plates and having a slotted portion exposed tlerein, of means coacting with the guidiig means for guiding the sash in its sliding movement.
2. A wimlow-sash including a side bar having pane-holding means, spaced side 'llanges projccting `from its outcr side, forming a guide-way between them, one of said 'llanges being detachable, and means for securing said detachable flange to the bar independently of the pane-holding means.
3. A window sash including a side bar having guiding means, spaced retaining plates, one of which is detachable from the bar, means for securing the detachable plate to the bar, and a pane-receiving carrier located between the retaining plates and removable upon the detachrnent of said retaining plates, said carrier being held against displacement from the bar by the plates.
4. A window sash including a side bar comprising a partition wall having spaced guiding flanges projeeting from one side, retainng plates projecting from the other side, and a slotted carrier tube located between and secured to the bar by the retaning plates.
5. A window-sash including a side bar having a partition wall, retainng plates projecting from one side of the wall', a pane-receiving carrier located between the retaining plates, spaced guide fianges projecting froni the other side of the partition plate, certain of said fianges and plates being detachable,
and means for securing the detaehable plate and detachable flange to the partition wall.
6. A window sash including a partition wall having an inset retaining plate along one inargin, and an outstanding guide flan e projecting froni the opposite side of said plate and located at the other inargin, a detachable retaining plate associated with the first mentioned plate, a slotted carrier tube clamped between the plates, and a detachable guide flange carried by the partiton wall and associated With the first mentioned outstanding flange.
In testinony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto a'lfiXed Iny signature in the presence of two witnesses.
