the some, and c the c sing of my iniprcved To all whom it may 4? h A 11 provcnients i1 certain new and tives ol whicl. tiozi.
This invention relates to an improved at; tachmsnt l'or locomotives by which the cin ders and ashes which are ,zsrried oil through the Smokestack of the locon'iotive are eollected and prevented in flying around to Wards the cars to the l at annoyance of the passengers; and the irwention consists of it cinder-cllecting attccl. mt for lO'COITiOt-lVGS which comprises a closed casing divided by a transverse partition into two conipztrh inents, one compartment for collecting" the heevicr eindcrs and the other coinpsrtment for collecting the lighter cindcrs and the second compartment being partlv with Water for this purpose end comics": with the first ecinpartnn nt by a downvvsrillvextending c mrluctiog-pipc.
The first conipertment is connected by a. pipe with venn by :2. suitable motor,
tileting an d which fan is connect .1 wit the smohcst so that the force for cs ing the g'iroductc: o combustion through the attachment and then to the atmosphere produced.

later a, at the upper part of said casing. The
curved smolsesteck enters the ventiletor--cas- 11. at the center so that the products of coincoiuwctcd with the outside of the casin d and leediiigg' into the collecting-chemhei' or comp: tsncnt of the casing c.
The casing c is divided into two chambers or compertments by an upright transverse partition 0 which is connected with a curved and downavardly extending pipe f, said pipe being located in the second compartment and extending below the level of e quantity of water in the same. The first compare ment is provided with a deflecting-diaphrsgin e for the products of combustion conducted through pipe e in the upper part the first compartment. A horizontal partition 0" is near the upper part of the first compartment and provided with s fui'inel-sh ed up-tehe a, so that the products of combustion are conducted through the tip-take into the upper part of the first coinpertinent end. from the same to the downwardly extending pipe f and The heavier particles, such as cinders, are collected in the first con'ipmtinent and removed from time to time from the same by means of'e hinged door c arranged near the bottom of the same. The lighter cii'lders and ashes are delivered through the lower part of the pipe f, below the body of water, into the second oustion pess oil through a chimney (,i that is arranged at the center of the second compartment. ln'thc top oi the first eon'ipertment is arranged cover It so as to give access to the upper end of the conductingpipef for clemiing the same.
The lovi'er part of the second or watercoinpsrtznent is provided with a tightlyclesing side-door c end with a. dischargecock c for permitting the dreiningof the Water and. the cleaning of the Water-cone pertinent from the impurities collected therein. At the upper part of the Watercorn ertment is arranged a Weter-supply nipp e 0 having a stopcock a hose being; attached to the supply-nipple for supplying a quantity of Water to the watcr-compertcompartment, While the products of comment, which is provided, in addition thereto,
with an indicetor i by which the level of the Water in the waiter-coinpertinent indicated. This indicator consists of e lloat L the lower end and s. rod which guided ,mstien are forced through a curved pipe 6 at the top part ol thewater-compartment,"as shown in Fi .3.
The ventfiator is driven in any suitable manner by an electric motor m which is 1 either placed on the shaft ofthe ventilating fan or sidewise of the same, the ower oi the motor being transmitted in it e latter case by the shaft of the electric motor to the shaft of the ventilatonfan. A register m is arranged in the bottom of the lair-casing so as to regulate the suction from the Smokestack the ventilating-fan serves to increase the draft in the boiler-fines.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination, with a locomotive: boiler, of a cinder-collecting attachment rovided with a transverse partition so as to orm two compartments, one for collect' ing the coarser particles and the other a belt 1c and bevel gearing L from filled. with water for collectin the fine?) particles, an up-take in the first compartment, a downwardlyextending conducting pipe connecting the upper part of the first compartment with the lower part of the water compartment, a ventilator supported on the locomotive, a motor for operating the same, a curved Smokestack connected with the center of the fan-casing, and a curved pipe for connecting the ventilatorecasing with the iirst compartment of the cinder-collecting attachment. I
2. in a cinder co'llecting attachment for locomotives, a casing provided with a central partition, a supply-pipe connected with the smokestack for supplying the products of combustion to the first compartment of the casing, a deflecting-plate below the lower end oi the supply-pipe, a horizontal partition at the upper end of the first com-- partment provided Witlr an lip-take, a lownwardhr-extending pipe connecting the upper part of the first compartment with the lower part of the water-compartment, and a chimney at the upper part of the second or water-compartment.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, 1 have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
