Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
IRA POWARS, OF WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOORSPR|NG.
Speccation forming part of Letters Patent No. 86,3l8, dated January :26, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA PowARs, a citizen of Waukegan, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Graduated Spring for Doors, Gates, &c. 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providin g a door or gate with a graduated spring, upon which is always an equal pressure, whether the door be open or shut, thus avoiding the wear and strain to which door-springs are usually subjected.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a perspective view with the door partly open. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line x The spring Ais fastened to the door or gate by screws or their equivalents at c b, and the opposite end, e, of the spring A, which may be supplied with a roller attached thereto, passes over and around the block G, on which it freely moves, in the groove i. The block C is secured to the post or facing by screws or their equivalents.
The spring A can be inade of steel, brass, or any other suitable material, and will be found to be more economical than the springs now in use7 as it lasts longer, owing to the equal pressure upon it at all times, and no danger to be apprehended from overstraining.
When it is required to increase or lessen the Y IRA POVVARS.
Vitnesses FRANCIS E. CLARKE, JASPER A. BAKER.
