BOX-STRAPPING REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
Application filed March 19,1907. Serial No. 363,323.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, EDWARD BRUCE DUNN, a resident of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Strapping Reels; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. i
This invention has relation to box-strapping reels, and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a reel adapted to retain box-strapping and the like in such manner as to render the same readily accessible and at the same time securely retain that portion of the strapping not desired for immediate use.
The reel consists primarily of a base, upon one edge of which is erected a vertical standard which is provided at its upper end with a spring-actuated catch and at an intermediate point with a journaled shaft. A standard is hinged to the oppositeedge of the base and is provided at its free end with a hasp which is adapted to receive said catch and at an intermediate point with a bearing adapted to receive the end of the said shaft. The shaft is retained. upon the fixed standard by means of a ratchet wheel attached to the end portion of the shaft, and a pawl of peculiar configuration is mounted upon the standard for engagement with said ratchet wheel. The intermediate portion of the shaft is of greater diameter than its end poi.- tions, and the roll of strapping is mounted upon the said intermediate portion of the shaft.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is an edge elevation of the reel showing a roll mounted thereon and in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of an intermediate portion of the reel, with a roll mounted thereon. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the hasp and looking at the upper end of the fixed standard. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hasp. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the catch, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the shaft.
The reel consists of the base 1, upon one edge of which is erected, in fixed relation, the standard 2; said standard is provided at it supper end with a plate 3. The catch 4 is pivoted to the said plate and may swing into an erect position above the same, but it is limited against outward swing with relation to the engages the edge of the plate 3. The spring 6 is interposed between the upper end of the standard 2 and the catch 4, and is under tension with a tendency to maintain the said catch in an erect position. The shaft 7 is journaled in the standard 2 at a point intermediate of the ends thereof. The said shaft is provided with the intermediate portion 8, which'is of greater diameter than the end portion. The ratchet wheel 9 is fixed to the end of the shaft 8 and is located adjacent the outer side of the standard 2; the washer 10 being interposed between the said ratchet wheel and the side of the standard 2 and acting as a wear plate. The pawl 11 is pivoted at the point 12 to the side of the standard 2, and is provided with an integral spring portion 13, the end of which is confined in a pin or lug 14' also attached to the side of the standard 2. The pawl 11, actuated by the tension of the spring 13, is at all times in engagement with the periphery of the wheel 9. The standard 15 is hinged to the base 1 at the edge thereof opposite that to which the standard 2 is attached. The standard 15 is pro vided at an intermediate point with a perforation 16 which serves as a bearing for that end of the shaft 7 opposite the end provided with the ratchet wheel. The hasp 17 is hinged to the upper free end of the standard 15 and is adapted to swing transversely across the upper ends of both of the said standards and en gage the catch 4. The roll of strapping 18 is mounted upon the intermediate portion 8 of the shaft 7. The strapping may be readily unwound from the said roll, and the engagement of the pawl 11 with the wheel 9 will prevent free rotation of shaft 7 and hence the strapping cannot become unduly slack in unwinding. It is also apparent that the shaft 7 is inseparably mounted upon the standard 2, but that the standard 15 may swing away from the standard 2 and the shaft 7. By this arrangement the center block of the roll 18 may be removed laterally from the shaft and another roll may be placed thereon.
What is claimed is:
A reel comprising a base, a standard fixed to the base, a shaft permanently journaled in said standard, a ratchet wheel fixed on said shaft, a pawl pivoted on said standard and engaging said ratchet wheel and having a spring end confined on the said standard, and a standard hinged to the base and having a bearing for the temporary reception of said shaft.
