ERNEST SCHILDBACK, OF ELMHURST, ILLlNOISl WIND-SHIELD FOR VEHICLES.
Specification of Iretters Patent.
Patented July 30,1907.
Application filed March is, 1907. Serial No. 362,178.
To all it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ennns'r SCHILDBACK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofiElmhurst, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented for Vehicles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
certain new anduseful Improvements in Wind-Shields My invention relates to wind-shields for vehicles,
and particularly automobiles, and its object isto pro:
vide a divided or split transparent shield, .the upper sash of which is readily removable from the top of the lowersash, and which can be easily and securely clamped into place either-in a raised or lowered adjusted position. This I accomplish in the manner: hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings:+Figure'-1 is a side elevation of my improved wind-shield shown applied to the forward portion of an automobile body, with theupper sash in a raised position. v Fig. 2-is a detached perspective view ofthe fixture for adjusting the upper sash.- Fig.
body of an automobile comprising the usual side-sills 3is a transverse sectionalview, slightlyenlarged, taken on dotted'line 3-3, Fig. i. Fig. 4 is'a similar view on dotted line 4-4, Fig. l.-
The drawings represent the forward portion of the Aof the chassis and the hood l3 covering the driving or propelling mechanism of the vehicle. Secured to and arising above the dash-board at the rearof the hoodis the rectangular frame or lower sash G of the shield that surrounds a suitableplate of glass or. other transparent material. This sash is preferably made of metal and its side edges project'downwardly to provide suitable extensions 0, c, that assist in securing the said. lower sash in place. Preferably mounted in'the same vertical plane with and above the lower sash, and held in proper position by brackets D, is an upperremovable sash d, which likewise consists of a/rectangular metal frame surrounding a. plate of glass and preferably'corre sponding in dimensions and general outline with the lowersash. p I
As shown, brackets D are permanently secured to the edge of and/project above the top of the stiles ofthe lower sash. They .areea'ch provided upon the vertical faces opposite each other with a suitable ll-shaped.
channel E, in which the upper sash preferably slides and is secured when adjusted in a raised position.' In
the upper outside edge of this bracket a suitable slotted recess e is cut away so as to seat the shank of a set-screw 50 F engaging a screw-threaded, opening-in the lower side edgeof the upper sash, by the turning of which said sash is securely clamped in position. (last integral with'bracket D, and projecting outwardlypreferably transverse to the yertical plane of the sashes, is a suit'-.- able bifurcated bracing arm the two members ofwhicli" merge into a socket f that is adapted to receive and way.
gage said slotted recesswhen the upper sash is lowered hold th'e upper end of-a brace or stay-rod G. The oppofsiteor lower end of this brace Gpreferably extends to and is bolted or otherwise secured to the forward portion of the side sills of the chassis.
Ata convenient place upon the lower portion of the stiles of the 10ml sash I secure two laterally projecting.
supporting-plates 11 having their top edges each provided with a suitable recess or slot and it is so arranged that it is adapted to receive and support the upper sash when the shield is lowered in the manner'shown in I dotted lines in Fig. 1. Secured to the upper portion of this sash is a plate having a keystone-shaped lug h projecting outwardly therefrom, the edges of which are undercut in the manner shown and are adapted to engage a slot cut in boss 1 that is-cast on the rear of the bracket'D. When this wind-shield is in an ,open position the lower sideedges of the stiles 01" the upper sashes 'are slidin'to' the channel of bracket Duntil the two sashes meet, and set-screw F is seated in the recesse. The milled head of the set-screw is then turned until it securely clamps the sashes in said bracket.
When it is desired to lower or close' the wind-shield the upper sash is simply removed from above the lower sash and the lug h inserted in the slot in boss 'i on the bracket. The'sash maythen be forced down as far as it will go in this slot so that the shank of screwF will seat itself in the recess of bracket H. The screw is then tightened until it clamps the parts securely in place so means secured to and projecting above the'stil'es of said lo'wer sash-having channels in the inner oppcsingedges of their projected portions in which said upper sash is mounted,'a1id provided withslotted recesses in one of the faces :thereof, means engaging said upperfsash and adapted to clamp the same to said first-mentioned means in a vertical position above said lower sash, and means projecting from the upper portion of said upper sash and adapted to 2.-A wind-shield for vehicles comprising a stationary lower sash and alg 'upper sash removably mounted thereon, means secured to and projecting above the stiles of said lower sash having channels in the inner opposing "edges of their projected portions in which said upper sash is mounted, and provided with slotted recesses in one of the faces thereof, a setscr'ew engaging said upper sash and adapted to clamp the same tosaid means in a vertical position above said lower sash, and means projecting from the upper portionpf said upper sash and adapted -town 3. A wind-shield for vehicles comprising a stationary lower sash and an upper-sash removahly mounted thereon, brackets secured to and projecting above the stiles of said lower sash having channels in the inner opposing edges of their projected portlonB in which said upper sash is mounted and'provlded with slotted recesses in one ofthe faces thereof, a set-screw engaglngsaidupper sash and adapted engage said slotted recess when theupper sash is lowered.
to clamp the same to said bracket in a vertical position above said lower sash, and means projecting from the upper portion of said upper sash and adapted to engage said slotted recess when the upper sash is lowered.
' 4. A wind-shield for vehicles comprising 'a stationary lower sash and an upper sash removably mounted thereon, brackets secured to and projecting above the stiles of said lower sash having channels in the inner opposingedg'es 01- their projected portions in which said upper sash is mounted, and provided with slotted recesses in one of the faces thereof a set-screw engaging" said upper sash and adapted vertical position from the upper to clamp the same to said bracket in a above said lower sash, a lug projecting sash and adapted to engage said slotted upper sash is lowered, and means secured to the lower por; tion of said lower sashfor supporting said upper sash in a lowered position.
A wind-shield for lower sash and an upper brackets secured to and vehicles comprising a stationary sash removably mounted thereon, projecting above the stiles of said lower sash having channels in the inner opposing edges 01' their projected portions in which said upper sash is 7 mounted, and provided with slotted recesses in one of the faces thereof, a sct-screw engaging said upper sash and adapted to clamp the same to said bracket in a vertical position above said lower sash :1 lug projecting from the upper sash and adapted to engage said slotted recesswhen the upper sash is lowered, and a supporting-plate secured to the lower portion of said lower sash for supporting said upper sash in a lowered position.
sane-rs same to said bracket above said sash is lowered. vehicles comprising a stationary lower sash, and a removable upper sash, corresponding lower sash and each consisting of a suitable plate provided with a slotted recess, a channel in'the inner opposing edge of the projected portion of said plate, a cut away portion at the top of said channel and a bracing arm projecting forwardly from said plate, a set-screw engaging the upper set-screw engaging said upper to and projecting from the adapted to engage the resash and seated in said cut away portion and adapted to clamp said sash to said bracket, lugs projecting from said upper sash adapted to engage said recesses when lowered, and braces secured at one end to said bracing arm and having its opposite end secured to the body of the vehicle.
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 28th day of February, A. D., 1907.
