Specification of Letters Patent.

- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN A. HACKETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of. Pennsylvania,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks, of which the following is a specification,

reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates particularly to a construction of trunk wherein a movable support is provided for the tray or trays, with mechanism for elevating the support to bring the trays upwardly into a position where they can be conveniently packed, unpacked, or removed, as desired, without the necessity of bending over the trunk, as in the ordinary construction.

The invention consists in the novel and peculiar construction of the trunk and in the arrangement and combination of the various parts as hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, with the trays detached; Fig. 2 is a sectional end view thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the interior of the trunk; Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the winding drum.

In the drawings as thus briefly described, A represents the trunk of any ordinary construction, provided with a top B. Within the trunk is arranged a support C for one or more trays, as desired. In this instance, the support is in the form of a frame-work adapted to travel in guides C arranged in pairs upon the inner faces of the trunk ends. It consists of end sections D E, a bottom section F, and an intermediate connecting section G joining the ends. The end sections are united to the base or bottom of the support by angle bars a, which form guides or ways for the trays. Between the top and bottom of the end sections are similar bars I) forming ways for an intermediate tray, while similar bars 0 connect the upper portions ofthe ends with the intermediate section G to form ways or guides 40 for a third tray. The several pairs of ways described are provided at their inner ends with upturned portions d, which form stops limiting the inward movement of the trays.

The mechanism for raising and lowering the support 45 comprises a drum H, secured upon the inner face of the trunk front by means of a sleeve 1, arranged within a bearing J in the trunk body, and extending through and secured to the drum by a key K. The operating handle or lever O is detachable, so

that it may be placed inside of the trunk. When it is desired to raise the trays, the lever is applied in the manner described, and upon rotation causes the cables to wind upon the drum, thus forcing the support up wardly into the position indicated in Fig. 1. By

moving the latch into engagement with the ratchet, the support is held in its raised position, so that access may be had to the trays, and the latter removed.

Upon the replacement of the trays on the support, the

weight is suflicient upon releasing the lock to return the support to its initial position.

What I claim as my invention is,

1. In a trunk, the combination with the trunk body, of

a traysupporting-frame therein arranged for sliding movement, a single drum,

vertical cables engaging the support and adapted to be wound upon the drum, one end of each cable being secured to the drum and the other end to the trunk body and a detachable operating member for rotating the drum.

2. In a trunk, the combination with the trunk body, of

oppositely disposed vertical guides therein, a traysupporting-frame engaging the guides, 21 single drum journaled in the body, sheaves near the front corners at the top of said body cables attached to said body at the top of its back and extending beneath the tray supporting frame and adapted to be wound upon the drum, and a detachable operating lever for rotating said drum.
