DORA HARRISON, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED BUST-FORM AND ARM-PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. July 23, 1907'.
Application filed November 6,1906. Serial No. 342,208.
vdegree and without danger oi leakage of air and collapsing, to securely hold the article in proper place on the Wearers body, and to insure all the desiredl comfort to the wearer.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment o the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters o reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views- Figure l is a perspective view ofthe improvement as applied; Fig. 2 is .an enlarged front elevation oi the improvement; Fig. 3 is a cross section oi the same, on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional side elevation oi the inflating nozzle and cap; and Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation, showing a modiiied form oi the means for iniiating the pads.
The combined bust form and arm pad consists essentially of the inflatable pads or bags A and A preferably made of thin, flesh-colored rubber, rendered nonodorous by special treatment. provided, at their adjacent edges, with integral lacearms B and B provided with apertures for the lacing O, to connect the two pads with each other. The pads A and A are alike in construction, and each consists of a bust form A2 and an arm pad A3, the bust forms- A2 extending over the bust of the wearer, and the arm pads extending under the arms of the wearer, with a view to take the place of the padding that is now usually placed between the lining and outside of a dress waist, to ill the hollow places under the wearers arms, to give a better orm.
' Now, in order to hold the article conveniently in position on the Wearers body, the upper edge oi each pad A and A is provided, at the arm pad A3, with spaced integral top tabs D, D, engaged by the ends of a shoulder strap E, preferably in the form of an eleastic band and adapted to be slipped over the arm of the wearer to the shoulder, to support the combined bust form and arm pad hom the shoulders oi the wearer in a very convenient manner.
The lower edge oi each pad A and A is provided with The pads A and A are' spaced integral bottom tabs F, F located approximately at the middle of the bust form A2 and the arm pad A3; and each of the said tabs F, F is engaged by a band G adapted to be fastened to the corset or other garment, to prevent the combined bust form and arm pad from moving upward out of proper position, especcially when used in bathing.
From' the foregoing it will be seen that full provision is made to securely hold the combined bust form and arm pad in position to prevent displacement in any direction.
In order to enable the user to conveniently inflate the pads A, A each is provided with a nozzle H, preferably secured to the upper edge of the bust form A2, adjacent to the lace-arm B or B so as to be Within convenient reach oi the wearers mouth, in case it is desired to further inflate the pads A and A after they are in place. A cap H screws on the outer end of the nozzle H, to securely close the same after the pads are inflated. The cap H is provided With a rubber disk H2 for engaging the outer end oi the nozzle II, to preyvent undesirable leakage of air from the pads.
In the modiiied form shown in Fig.' 5, use is made of a specially prepared spongy substance I inserted in the rubber wall of each pad A, A and through this substance is forced the pointed end .I of a tube J, provided with a mouth piece .l2 for forcing air through the tube .I and into the pad A or A to inflate the same to the desired degree. When this has been done, the pointed end .I of the tube .I is withdrawn from the substance I, and the latter now closes, by its own elasticity, the puncture made by the pointed end J" of the tube .I to retain the air in the pad A or A. I necessary, a slight pressure or rubbing With the linger on the substance I will cause a quick and thorough closing of the puncture.
The bust form A2 of each pad A and A is formed with a comparatively liat back A4 (see Fig. 3), to properly fit the wearers body, and with semispherical fronts A5 to conform to the shape of the natural bust. The arm pad A3 of each pad A, A is preierably given the usual contour oi dress shields, so that further description thereof is not deemed necessary, it being, however, understood that the top and bottom edges of the pads A, A are strongly reinforced to maintain a proper shape of the bust forms and the arm pads as long as the pads remain inflated. i
By combining the bust form and arm pad as described, a convenient single article is provided for a double purpose, and which article, by the use of the shoulder straps, is safely supported from the shoulders o the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent:
1. A combined bust form and arm pad, comprising,r a pad made of inatable material and having a bust form portion and an arm pad portion, means connected with the arm pad portion for supporting the pad from the shoulder of the wearer, and means connected with the lower edge of the arm pad portion and the bust form portion for securing the pad to a garment of the wearer to prevent the pad from moving upward out of position.
2. A combined bust form and arm pad, comprisinga pad made of rubber and having a bust form portion and an arm pad portion, the said portions having interior communica tion with each other, a valve on the said pad for inflating the said portions simultaneously, a shoulder strap on the arm pad portion, and means connected with the said pad and adapted to be secured to a garment of the wearer to prevent the pad from moving upward out of position.
3. A combined bust form and arm pad, comprisingr a pair of pads made of inliatable material and each having a bust form portion and an arm pad portion, means for connecting the adjacent ends of said pads with each other, means connected with the arm pad portions for supporting the pads from the shoulders of the wearer, means connected with the lower edge of each pad for securing the same to a garment of the wearer to prevent the pad from moving upward out of position, and means for inating the pads, the said means being secured to the upper edge of said pads near their adjacent ends.
4. A combined bust form and arm pad, comprising a pair of pads, each lmade of rubber and capable of being inilated, each pad having a bust form portion and an arm pad portion, means connected with the arm pad portion for 'supporting the pad from the shoulders of the wearer, tabs at the lower edge of each pad andl approximately at the middle of both pad portions, means connected with the said tabs and' adapted to be fastened to a garment of the wearer to 'prevent the pad from moving upward out of position, and means for connecting the pair of pads with each other.
5. A combined bust form and arm padcomprising a pair of pads, each made of rubber and capable of being inlated, each pad having a bust form and an arm pad, each pad having a pair of spaced integral top tabs at the upper edge of the arm pad, a shoulder strap connected with the said pair of spaced tabs integral bottom tabs at the lower edge of each pad and approximately at the middle of both pad portions, tie bands engaging the said bottom tabs, and a lacing connecting the pads with each other.
6. A combined bust form and arm pad, comprising inatable pads each having a bust form portion and an arm pad portion, the pads having tabs at the upper edges of the arm pad portions, shoulder straps connected at the ends with the said tabs,v bottom tabsat the lower edge of each pad and approximately at the middle of both pad portions, and tie bands engaging the said bottom tabs.
7. A combined bust form and arm pad, comprising a pair of pads each made of material capable of being inflated, each pad having a bust form portion and an arm pad portion, means connected with the arm pad portion for supporting the pad from the shoulder of the wearer, tabs at the lower edge of each pad, and approximately at the middle of both pad portions, means connected with the said tabs and adapted to be vfastened to a garment of the wearer, lace-arms at the adjacent edges of the pads, a lacing engaging apertures in the lace-arms to connect the pads with each other, and nozzles for inflating the pads, the said nozzles being secured to the upper edges of the said pads adjacent to the lace-arms' In testimony whereof I have signed by name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
