JOHN WILLIG, OF HARRIS, MINNESOTA.
PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1907'.
Application filed March 14,1907. Serial No. 362,331.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harris, in the county of Ohisago and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows of which the following is a specification.
Turning plows embodying a point, share and moldboard are subjected to unequal wear and it is the pur pose of this invention to devise a novel arrangement of the parts whereby provision is had for compensating for wear at a minimum cost and without replacing essential parts of the plow and which are costly.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
\Vhile the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the point showing depression 3 and 5 also how steel sole is held to the bottom of landside by means of angle iron 11. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of frog piece and manner of fastening steel plates 9 and 10. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on the line yy of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The plow point comprises a wing 1 and a flange 2 at one side of the wing and constituting the forward portion of the land-side. A depression is formed in the upper side of the wing adjacent to the edge opposite to that provided with a flange 2 and constitutes a seat to receive the inner end of the share 4.
The share may consist of a single piece or be formed of sections united so as to form in effect a single part. The inner end of the share fits within the longitudinal seat or depression 3 of the point and is bolted or otherwise fastened thereto.
The moldboard 7 is of ordinary formation and is fastened to this cast point and steel share combination in the usual way as to give best results in the operation of the plow. A second depression 5 is provided in the upper side of the wing at the rear end of the point to receive a wear piece 6 which protects the point, share and mold board at their points of juncture.
The wear piece 6 overlaps the juncture between the point, mold-board and share and comes flush with the upper or front side thereof. This wear piece may be of chilled iron or consist of a steel plate tempered so as to resist wear and receive a polish to insure free sliding of the earth thereover.
A bar 8 being part of a solid piece of forging or malleable casting, comprising a wing 12, flange 13 and 14, such combination as usually called frog-piece is the means of coupling together point share and mold-board, the wing 12 underlapping wing 1 of point and bolted or otherwise secured thereto, the projecting portion 13 likewise secured to flange 2. An off-set is formed in the rear portion of the wing 12 to throw the rear end 14 in a higher plane than wing 12 so as to underlap a portion of the mold-board which is to be attached thereto. This frog-piece rearwardly projecting bar 8 is the essential portion of landside to which are to be fastened steel plates 9 and 10 which are to run the entire length of bar 8 on the outer side of landside and to meet flush with flange 2 of the point, thus protecting the bar 8 from sidewear when plow is in operation. Under the bottom of said bar 8 I also have a removable sole of steel 15 which is held to its place by bolts or otherwise, through the flange of the angle iron 11 on the inside of the bar 8 as shown in Fig. 2. This sole is to run flush with 10 up to flange 2 the side pieces 9 and 10 and sole 15 may be of steel or chilled iron so as to produce best abrasive action of the earth upon land-side when the plow is in operation.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed piece and point and connected to mold-board.
2. In a plow, the combination of a point having a longi tudinal depression and an approximately transverse depression, and a wear piece seated in said transverse depression of the point and overlapping the contiguous 'ends of the share and moldboard at their juncture with said wear point.
3. In a plow, the combination with the point comprising a wing and a longitudinal flange forming part of a land-side, of a frog comprising a wing, it flange and a bar, the wing and flange of the frog-piece fitting within the angle formed between the wing and flange of the point and the bar extending in the rear of the said longitudinal flange, protecting means applied to the outer side of the said bar and flush with the aforesaid longitudinal flange, and a sole piece under-lapping the said bar and its protecting means and having its outer edge about flush with the outer side of the aforesaid protecting means.
4. In a plow, the combination with the point compristhereto, and an angle iron attached to the inner side of 10 ing a wing and a longitudinal flange forming part of a the said bar and having a Wing extended over the inner land-side, of a frog comprising a Wing, a flange and a longitudinal edge portion of the said sole piece.
bar, the wing and flange of the frog-piece fitting within In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence the angle formed between the wing and flange of the of two Witnesses.
