Description
I PATENTED OCT. 8, 1907. D. J. GALBRAITH.
VALVE.
- APPLICATION FILED MAR. 4, 1901.
FIG-
WIZVSSES:
Allomey DENNIS .I. GALBRAITH, OF PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
VALVE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedoet. 8, 1907.
Application filed March 4, 1907. Serial No. 360,343-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS J. GALBRAITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to valves used in connection with stationary washstands; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a stationary washstand provided with two valves according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the valves, drawn to a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the body of the said valve.
A is a stationary washstand, and B and B are the body portions of two similar valves. Each valve has a delivery spout b which projects over the bowl of the washstand and a valve spindle 0 provided with a handle 0. The valve spindle projects from .the body portion or casing B of the valve at a right angle to the delivery spout b.
In order that each spout may overlap the bowl and that the handles may be arranged to the right and to the left of the bowl, so that they may be operated con veniently, the two valves are not exact duplicates when their parts are assembled and placed in position. In order that the same identical parts may be used for each valve they are made interchangeable, and the body or casing B is made reversible.
The body B has a stufiing box E at its middle part of any approved construction. The valve spindle 0 projects through this stuffing-box and is provided at one end with a handle 0. The valve spindle is provided with a crank f at its other end inside the casing, and F is a plug valve of any approved construction which is operatively connected with this crank f.
The body B of the valve is provided with two similar valve seats g and two similar screwthreaded projections G having shoulders 9. These valve seats, projections and shoulders are arranged at the same distance on each side of the center of the valve spindle, so that the body of the valve isreversible and can be used for a right hand valve or for a left hand valve. Only the lower one of the two valve seats is used when the valve is secured in position.
II is the fastening stem or pipe which is screwed onto the lower of the two screwthreaded projections G, and which is provided with suitable fastening devices h for securing it to the washstand.
I is an ornamental cap which is screwed to the upper screwthreaded projection of the valve body for the purpose of closing it.
The delivery spout b is connected to the body portion so that it can be revolved, and for this purpose a union joint 71 is provided for connecting the said spout with the body.
The parts are all kept in stock and are assembled so that pairs of valves are provided, but any right hand valve can be changed to a left hand valve if necessary. To effect the change the body portion is reversed or inverted, and the delivery spout is turned around so as to deliver downward. In changing the valve, the valve stem and head are reversed relative to the operating spindle so as to cooperate with the lower valve seat. I
I do not confine myself to valves used in connection with washstands, as valves constructed according to this invention can be used/for any desired purpose, and I do not confine myself to the specific construction of the working parts of the valve which are shown in the drawings.
What I claim is:
In a valve for a washstand, the combination, with a base having a water inlet, of a reversible valve-body having a screwthreaded portion anda valve-seat at each end of it and a stufiing-box at its middle part, each of the said screwthreaded portions being adapted to engage with the said base, a cap also adapted to engage with either of the said screw-tl1readed portions, 3. revoluble delivery spout connected to the middle portion of the said valve-body, a valve-spindle journaled in the said stuffing-box and pro vided with a crank inside the said body-portion, an operating handle secured on the projecting end portion of the said spindle, and a single plug-valve operatively connected with the said crank and adapted to engage with either of the said valve-seats, whereby the device can be changed from a right-hand to a letthand valve.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DENNIS .T. GALBRAITH.
Witnesses EDWARD. DACEY, PETER A. GALBRAITH.
