Patented Sept. 24, 1997.
Serial No. 873,0'7l.
To all 1177mm it may concern:
Be it. known that 1, WILLIAM BOLIAYAIIY, {L citizen of the Ur 'ted States, residing at Sharon, in the, count,y oi Wnlworth and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new mid useful Improvements in Nutllocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drnwing.
-My intention relates to improvements in nut and bolt locks and consists in the novel construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide s simple and practical device of this chara .ter which may he readily applied and locked, which will effectively we vent-the lo ked parts h'om working loose bird which when so desired may he readily unlocked.
The above and other objects which will appear as the nature of the inventitm is better understood are at,- toincd in the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure is a sectional view through my improved i nut and bolt locking device, showing the use of the same; I is a similar view taken on a plane at right angles; 3 is a perspective view of one of the locking plates; Fig. 4 is a similar View of the spring washer; Fig. 5 isa pe' ective of the ratchet washer; and, Figa} is a detail vii-2w oi the rate let nut.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the part or parts to be united by the bolt 2 and through which the latter passes. Said part or parts 1 may he an object or element or" any description. Arranged upon the opposite laces of the part 1 are two locking plates 3, formed with elongated openings 5, t5 adaptedto register with th bolt opening in the part 1 and also formed withone or more apertures 7 for the reception of screws, bolts or other tsstenings 8 by means of which said plates are socured against rotation. The holt 2 has a head at one end adjacent to which is formed an enlarged rectangte lar or flattened portion S) which is adapted to enter the elongated opening 5 in the pinto 3 so that the bolt; will I he held against; rotation by said plate I). The opposite end of the bolt is screw threaded and projects through the elongated opening Ginthe plate 4 and adapted to .e a ratchet washer l0 and a ratchet nut ii. The
' 1 lormed upon its inner lace with an annular n" indie" extendingratchet teeth adapted to engage :1 hi nu int ies of rat clret tooth. l Cl upon the outer lace of the washer in. The inner-face of this n: eheris' formed with imvardly extending lugs or projections 14 which are adapted to enter the opening (1' in the plate 1 no that the washer rill he looked against rotation hy said plate. A. spring Washer 15 preferably in the form of a piece oi resilient; metal bent into substantially circular form and having its ends sprung outwardly in 0pposite directions to form biting teeth or spurs, is arranged upon the bolt 2 between its head and the outer is re of the bolt locking plate 3.
In applying the improved bolt and nut lock to the object or element upon which it is to he used, the plates 3, 4 are iii-st so tired upon the opposite faces of the some with their elongated openings in alineinent with the bolt opening and the bolt is then passed through said plates and the object or element 1, the spring Washer 15' having been first slipped upon the bolt. The ratchet asher is then placed upon the projecting threaded end of the bolt and its lugs 14 projected into the ends of the opening ('5 in the plate l. The ratchet nut is then screwed up upon the bolt against the ratchet Washer until the parts are drawn together. As the nut is tightened the spring washer .15 permits the ratchet teeth 12, 13 u on the nut and washer to slip over QELCll other but said teeth will effectively prevent the reverse rotation of the nutv in applying the device, I preferably oinploy the gripping tool set forth in an application tiled by me May 1 l. 1907 and hearing Serial Number 3723,073. l t will he seen that when the nut has heen applied and tightened it will he impossible for it to work loose nnd that the only way in. which it can he removed is hy loosening the screws or l'astcnings S in the plate 2-} and rotating said plate so as to screw the holt out o[ tho nut. The engagement of the rectangular or polygonal sha pod portion 5) ol' the hull. with the elmrgatcd opening in thc pinto 3 causes the bolt to he locked for rolnliou with said plate.
Having thus ties 'lbed my intention what i. claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
The combination with an :merturcd object or element, Iockinsr plates arranged upon opposite faces of said ohjcct and having elongated openings to uline with the nperture in said object, a bolt passed through said plates and said object and having at one end :1 head and an adjacent. enlarged portion to enter the elongated opening in one of suit} plates wherehy said bolt and plate will he locked together. a pring \Vl et' ui'rztnged upon the enlarged pmtion ol' the hull: hct'w'mn the bolt head andv the adjacent locking; phttm :1 ratchet ushet' :u'rnugt-d upon the threaded end of lhe hull. and having u'oj tions to enter the elonuntcd opening in the adjacent: inciting plate, a ratchet. u the threaded end of said hull and ac nst l and l'asteniir's uniti said locking p ates to suit) oh i. the tnsteniugs unit the locking pinto adjacent to the ll ztll oi the 1102! being riuuovahlc whereby said ohm: may he rotated to screw the bolt out of the. nut, suhstuutiall l and for the purpose s t forth.
in testimony wiwi'eol I hereunto atiix my ignalure in presence of two \vitnessrsf nul' sort-wed ug Mid ratchet. u!
