To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DARGIER DE SAINT VAULRY, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Horme, Loire, in said Republic, have invented certain new 5 and useful Improvements in Feed-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to feed-regulators and more particularly to devices of this character which are especially adapted for use in connection with the distributing hoppers of grinding mills, though they can be used for various purposes.
The invention has for its object to provide a feedregulator of this type which is capable of being very quickly and readily adjusted to vary the amount of 1-5 material passing through the same, such adjustment being possible while the device is in use.
To this end the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference characters denote the same parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a feed-regulator constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2
is a vertical section on line 2-2 Fig. 3, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view, the hopper being shown in section.
In the drawings, a a, denote brackets which are secured to the lower part of the distributing hopper A of the grinding mill. Said brackets are spaced laterally from each other and extend downwardly from the body of the hopper, which is provided above the same with a suitable opening f through which the ma terial may pass out of the hopper. 3 5 are each provided with downwardly converging grooves so that they form guides, in which are guided two upright parallel plates 1) 1), between the opposing faces of which the material passes. Said plates carry upon 'their outer faces racks g g respectively, which racks 40 are inclined at an acute angle to the plane of their respective plates. The series of teeth on said racks converge downwardly, as shown. Said racks mesh with toothed segments 6 e, which are arranged near one end of spindles e journaled between the opposing supporting brackets. Near the other ends of the spindles e there are arranged on the latter toothed segments 01 d,
which intermesh, as shown in Fig. 1. One spindle e has secured thereto at its forward end an operating lever c, which is guided by means of a pin 0 in an upwardly curved arm 0 mounted on the bracket a, as shown in Fig. 1, said arm having an arcuate slot 0 in which the pin 0 is guided. The pin and slot also act as a stop to limit the movement of the operating lever c.
In order to regulate the amount of material passing through the bottom opening f of the hopper, there are provided two slides f f, which slide laterally on the hopper bottom and define, by their meeting edges, the opening through which the material passes to the space between the opposing discharge plates b I). Said slides may completely close the outlet in the hopperbottom as shown in Fig. 4. For the purpose of operating the said slides, they are connected by a lever-Inechanism l, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4, said mechanism being operated by a lever l extending forwardly, as shown in Fig. 4. By this lever-mechanism the slides f f may be adjusted simultaneously toward and away from each other, but the particular arrangement of the operating mechanism is not an essential feature of the invention, it being merely necessary to provide any mechanism by which an opening between the meeting edges of the slides may be made to correspond in width with that between the opposing faces of the discharge-plates.
The operation of the device is as follows: Supposing the opposing discharge-plates to be in the position shown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to increase the distance between the same, the lever c is moved in downward direction, whereby the segments e e are rotated by the intermeshing segments d d. Said first-named segments by meshing with the racks g g produce the upward movement of said racks and of the plates in the direction of the lines :r :0 and 3 ythat is to say, at an acute angle to the plane of the plates. Said plates are thus maintained in parallel relation but moved upwardly and outward, so that the space between the same, and consequently the supply of material, are increased. When the operating lever is turned in the opposite direction the plates move downwardly and toward each other, but maintain their parallelism. The leVerguidi-ng device described serves as a stop to limit the movement of the plates. The slides f f may be readily adjusted as described.
The device has the advantage of great ease and quickness of operation so that the feed of the material may be instantaneously varied as desired. A further advantage of the device is that the friction of the material on the shiftable plates keeps the inner surfaces of said plates in clean condition.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a feed-regulator, the combination of parallel plates between which the material passes, and means to shift said plates simultaneously toward or away from each other in directions at an acute angle to their planes while maintaining them in parallelism.
2. In a feed-regulator, in combination, upright plates between which the material passes, and means to shift said plates upwardly and away from each other and downwardly and toward each other while maintaining them in parallelism. 1
3. In a feedregulator, the combination of upright parallel plates between which the material passes, downwardly converging guides for said plates, racks attached to said plates, toothed segments engaging said racks, and means to simultaneously rotate said segmentsv 4. In a feed-regulator, in combination, upright parallel plates between which the material passes, means to guide said plates upwardly and away from each other and downwardly and toward each other while maintaining their parallelism, racks carried by said plates upon their outward faces and having downwardly converging series of teeth, toothed segments engaging said racks", and means 10 for rotating said segments.
