To all it may concern:
Be it known that I,IRICHARD VARLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Englewood, in the used as the sole source of primary current, and batteries of every sort are dispensed with.
The use of batteries in motor vehicles is attended by I much trouble and annoyance mainly on account of the the light run-about class, and with an engine having fact that the amount of energy required for the engine ignition is large and beyond the capacity of any convenient portable battery, unlessthe same is renewed or recharged very frequently. Accordingly engine driven" magneto generators are frequently used to supply the ignition current when the engine is'running. Such f generators answer requirements except thatthey do not generate a current when the engine is at rest to en- In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view of an auxiliary 1 magneto generator included in'an ignition system and embodying the principles of my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail view-of a part of the same. Engines with four or more cylinders are now almost universally used onall motor vehicles, except those of this number of cylinders it always theoretically possible to start the engine from a'state of rest, since one of the four cylinders is bound to be'withi'u a quarter of a.
revolution of the nornral ignition point, and the ignition timing devices are always capable of being manipulated enough to reach the ignition point for such one of the cylinders within these limits. Since this cylinder contains a carbureted mixture remaining from the intake when the engine was last running, it follows that such charge will be exploded I and the engine started. This is not only theoreticallygthe case, but ispractically true for all cars which have finelybuilt cngines. The only requisite, therefore, is to obtain an ignition spark of suflicient intensity to ignite the charge which is often cold and only slightly compressed when the engine has been standing idle for a long time. The.
engine driven dynamo is of course not avail able when the engine is at rest.
In carrying out my invention I aim to provide a source of current which is compact and convenient, and
which has abundant energy to 'fire a poor mixture which has been'left standing in the cylinders for a long time. i I further aim to automatically cut out this auxiliaify sour'ce from action when the engine hasbeen started into operation.
