UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. I-IOVEY, OF THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO SHEFFIELD OAR COMPANY, or
THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN.
RAILWAY MOTOR-CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. 'IovnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Three Rivers,
- county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Motor-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway motor cars.
It relates particularly to an improved railway motor car adapted to be driven by an explosion engine.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved railway motor car adapted to be driven by an explosion engine.
Further objects, and objects relating to details of construction, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of myinvention by the de vices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is fullyillustrated in the accompanying drawing, forniing a part of this specification, in which,
Figure l is a detail sideelevation of my improved railway motor car, one of the side doors for the engine housing being removed. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse vertical sedtion through the car body showing the central arrangement of the engine. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation showing the arrangement of the seats at the rear of the engine. Fig. 4 is a detail end elevation of the engine housing.
In the drawing similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is the-floor of the car body, which is supported on suitable longitudinal sills as 8-S. The car illustrated is of the open type, the roof being supported by the side posts 2. In the floor of the car body is an opening or well 9, through which the engine 4 is arranged. The engine is provided with suitable driving connections to the traction .Wheels as 10, the details of which are not here illustrated, as they form no part of this invention.
The well or opening 9 is provided with a housing 5 for the engine, the top of which is adapted to form a platform or deck, it being intended that this platform or deck may be used for baggage or the like.
The engine is arranged in the longitudinal center of the car and seats as 3 are preferably provided at each side of the housing therefor. The housing is provided with a suitable door 6 in its front and also doors 7 at each side, through which access may be had to the engine. The doors '7 at the sides of the housing are located between the seats 3 as clearly appears in Fig. 1. By this arrangement, the engine, Which is of theexplosion type, is conveniently located, and the [1001' of the car body may be as low as is practicable. The housing prevents the exhaust from the engine entering the car, thereby obviating the annoyance which would otherwise be occasioned. At the rear oi the housing 5 I provide a plurality of seats, only one being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, as their arrangement will be readily understood.
I have illustrated and described in this application my improved railway motor car in detail in the form preferred by me on account of its structural simplicity and economy. It will, however, be readily understood that it is capable of considerable variation in structural details without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A railway motor car comprising a car body, having an engine well or opening through the floor thereof; on engine arranged through said opening; a housing for said well or opening, the top of said housing being adapted to form a deck or platform; doors in the sides and front end of said housing whereby access to said engine may he had, said housing being located so as to provide space for the motoriuan in front thereof; and seats at each side and to the rear of said housing. the said side doors of said housing being located between the seats at the sides thereof, substantially as described.
2. A railway motor car comprising a car body. having an engine Well 01' opening through the floor thereof: an engine arranged through said opening; a housing for said well or opening; doors in the sides and front end of said housing, whereby access to said engine may be had, said housing being located so as to provide space for the 1uotorman in front thereof; and seats at each side and to the rear of said housing, the said side doors of said housing being located between the seats at the sides thereof, subsi'nntially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
