PENCIL-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.v
PATENT EEioE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Appligation filed December 5. 1906. Serial No. 346.491.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, DE KELLERSTAMEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of New York and` State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in PencilpSharpeners, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to pencil Sharpeners,
and one of the principal objects of the Same.
is' to provide a simple and efficient device for sharpening pencils and for pointing the leads thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pencil vSharpener in which the. spiral cutting edge is resented to the pencil simultaneonsly at al y points from the lower to the upper end of the taperingIpoint of the pencil.
These and other objects are attained byy means of the. construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l,1 isI a side elevation of a pencil Sharpener made in accordance'with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.v Fig, 3 is a plan view of the saine. Fig. .4 is a vertical section of a modified forni of myinvention; of a cap or cover for the Sharpener.
Referring to the drawing for a.more'partic'clar description of my invention, the numeral l designates a' frusto-c'onical or tapering metallic tube having. a spiral Slot 2' therein which extends from a point yabout midway thereof and terminating at the lower end, as at 3. The upper edge of'the SlotjZ is sharpened and'bent slightly inward to form a cutting edge 4. The upper end of the' tube 1. is cylindrical or of equal diameter, and is provided with a depression 5 which has a Toughened wall and is desi ned for thep'urpose of pointing the lead o the pencil after the saine has been sharpened. A sleeve or ring 6 Surrounds the cylindrical portion 7,
said ring being provided with a recess 8v which engages `the depression 5 and thus firmly seats the ring 6 upon said-cylindrical.
ortion 7 and prevents said ring from turning independently of the Sharpener. As shown in F1 4, the cutting blade 4a is formed separatey from the tubular portion la, Said blade being Secured atthe upper edge of the I slot 2a, and the cutting edge a projecting in- Fig. "5 is al sectional view.
ward through the Slot Zi at anangle, as
shown in the drawing.
From. the -foregoing it will be obvious that a pencil inserted in the Sharpener and the pencil being'rotated by grasping the ring 6. and turning the'pencil inthe Sharpener, the.
edge 4 or a will .have contact on the point of the pencil from one end of the blade to the other, land owing' to the angle at which the cutting edge is disposed` relatively to the tube, the Wood of the pencil will be cut on a'.
spiral line across the grain of the wood, as will be obvious. After the pencil vhas been sharpened, the lead may be pointedby rotatin the same within the depression 5 of ing tribe having a spiral slot therein and a 'cutting-edge projecting at an angle in said slot, and a depression in one end of said tube for pointing the lead, substantially as described. 2. A pencil sharpener having a cutting edge, a cylindrical portion at one end thereof,
a depressionformed in said cylindrical portion, Said depression4 being roughened for pointing the pencil lead.
3. A pencil Sharpener comprising a taper-l' ing tu'be having a cylindrical portion at one end, a depression formed in said cylindrical portion, and a ring provided with a recess to engage said depression to ievent the ring from turning upon said cy indrical portion, said depression being roughened for pointing the pencil lead, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my Signature l in presence of two witnesses.
DE KELLER STAMEY.
