It will bev seen also that the spring is prevented from slipping forward of the shoulder E and that the wall of said recess freely incloses the spring and prevents improper bending of the saine and the stub occupies the interior of the spring, it is held and guided true therein, so that the roller is causedto contact uniformly with the adjacent portion of the window frame and prevented from irregular and wabbling motions thereon, it being also no'- ticed that the stub is short in its nature, that is, it is of less length than the spring, whereby in the compression of the latter the vstub does not interfere with the same, while to all intents, said stub is sufficiently held by the spring. It will be seen further that when desired a stronger spring may be employed in which case the coils of its forward portion may be reduced in diameter so as to properly embrace the stub, while bearing against the 'shoulder or should a lighter spring be desired, the coils of its forward end may be enlarged for the same purpose.
Should it be desired to prevent any possible rotation of the spring on the stub, the latter is formed in its side with an opening G and thespring has its adjacent end provided with a lip II which is adapted to enter said opening G, thus in a measure interlocking the spring with the stu In Fig. 5, I show the stub as made separate from the ears, but connected therewith by the rivet J which passes through said stub and the connecting back plate of the ears and has its ends headed on said stub and plate without however producing different results in the operation of the roller, the construcl tion however being such that the ears C and coiled spring which has one end fitted on said stub and adapted to abut against said shoulder, the other end of said spring being adapted to bear against the base' of the recess in the sash frame which receives the device, the stub serving to guide and steady the roller and prevent lateral or irregular motions thereof and avoiding the employment of a casing for the spring and a lining or stop in said recess, while a portion of the spring continues from the terminal of the stub and is free to contract and expand without liability to be interfered with by the wall of said recess.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a roller and B the shaft or axle thereof. C des-y ignates ears with which the ends of said axle are connected as the bearings thereof. Extended rearwardly from said ears is the stub I) which is integral therewith, being preferably forined together of cast metal, the stub being of such diameter thatthe place of con- 1 nection of the same with said ears forms the shoulder E.
F designates a spiral or coiled spring which has one end portion fitted on the stub D, the end of the saine bearing against the shoulder E while the opposite end is free, it being noticed that the stub is considerably shorter on the roller in which condition the latter v back connecting plate may be made of lighter material than the stub D, but in either case the spring F and the ears C occupy the opening or recessin the sash frame Without a covering, such as a lining therein as the Wall of said opening or recess provides of itself such covering and the back of said recess providing the seat Jfor the inner terminal of the spring. It Will be noticed also that the ears C form the bearings for the shaft or axle B, on Which the roller A is mounted, the end of said shaft being headed on the exterior of said ears. By this provision the device is Wider at the places of the ends of said shaft than the diameter of the spring F. Consequently While the device occupies the recess directly in the sash frame as has been stated, the side of the coils of the spring does not contact with the Wall of said recess, but on t e contrary is free therefrom, whereby While the ears C may be close to said Wall, said coils are removed from contact therefrom, and so the spring is enabled to expand f and contract Without interference of said Wall.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a Window holding and anti-rattling device, a coiled spring, a roller, ears, an axle secured to the latter and carrying said roller, a stub connected with said ears and extending rearwardly therefrom, and a shoulder intermediate of said ears and stub, only one portion of said spring being 'fitted on said stub, the other portion projecting freely therefrom, the device being adapted to freely occupy a recess directly in a sash frame, the free portion of said spring being adapted to be removed from controlling contact with the side Wall of said recess.
