W'. L. NEWlLL Attaching Legs to Stoves.
Patented Dec. 22, 1868. Q

"-PETERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHXNGTON D C gnite? @Bfiit WILLIAM LISTER NEWILL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ssienon TO HIMSELF AND RED- WAY & BURTON, on SAME PLACE.
Letters Puten tNo. 85,237, dated December 22, 1868.
IIIMPZRO'VED MODE OF ATTAGHING- STOVE-LEGS.
The Schedulereferred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, WILLIAM LISTER NEWILL, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Mode of Attaching Stove-Legs; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription thereofi reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The objectof this invention is to securea betterfitting and more secure attachment of the legs of stoves.
Figure 1 is a perspective view oi a foot or leg, and a portion of the bottom plate of a stove, in reversed position, the said leg and plate being detached.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same parts, in their attached condition.
A is the leg proper;
B, its shank, having a notch or indentation, 0, whose sides, a 0, both converge inward and upward, as represented, so as to engage and bind tightly upon ,a correspondingly-bevelled dovetail, D, which projects from the under side of the bottom plate E of the stove.
This mode of construction is found much preferable to the usual one, in which the bevelled outer edges of the leg-shank engage between two independent-duds, o1- bevelled projections,and which, without very oaieful 1noulding,are liable tobe'set'either too near or toodistant, or at too great or little a convergence to properly and securely fit the leg-shank, which consequently is liable to work loose by any jarring or-shifting of the stove, -so as sometimes to overturn the latter, and seton fire the floor and other articles in its vicinity.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- J The notched and bevelled shank 0,-and dovetailed projection D, when constructed and combined as herein described, and for the purposeset forth.
In testimony of which invention. I hereunto set my hand. v
WILLIAM LISTER-.NEWILL.
