To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FISHER H. LIPPIN- oor'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Perms lvania, have invented thereof. to provide, in a device of the ty ementioned, novel and'iinproved means or feeding the insert forward in the holder, for preventing accidental rearward movement thereof and for permitting of the rearward movement 'of the insert when such .move
ment is desired. .r
The constructioh of my invention will appear from the following description, in which reference is had to. the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, like numerals designating corresponding parts throughout the several views, wherein,
Figure 1 1s a side elevation of a pencil constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof the holder being shown as containing a lead insert. Fig. 3 1s a central longitudinal section taken at right angles to Fi 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are fragmentary longitu inal sections at right angles to' one another of a modified embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal section of a further modified embodiment, showing the use of a crayon or erasing rubber-insert.
In the forms of my invention illustrated, I employ a cylindrical holder 1 preferably of wood which is formed with a longitudinal bore 2 extending therethrough and with a narrow longitudinal slot 3 communicating with said bore. The slot 3' referably terminates short of the forwar end 4 of the pencil in order that the latter may be made holder 1.

In order that the insert 5 may be held against transverse movement in use, and to prevent any lateral movement or play thereof, a suitably constructed sleeve 6 is fitted within the outer end of the bore 2, and forms the inner wall of the pointed end 4. This sleeve 6 may be of any form or material suited to accomplish the purposes mentioned and may beslitted' if desired.
Novel means are provided for locating and holding the insert ,5 in any desired position in the bore 2. holder or follower constructed of wire inthe preferred embodiment of the invention and comprises a projection or finger piece which extends through the slot 3, and a rearwardly extending arm having ashar ened extremity designed to engage the we] s of the bore to prevent accidental or undesired rearward movement of the insert. The Wire is bent upon itself, as shown, to form the projection or finger piece 7. Adjacent this finger Iece and preferably integral therewith is a s eeve 8 formed by bending the wire into a spiral thereof. The arm 9 thus serves the function of a locking dog and in-such use is capable of being variously modified from the construction abov described. 'Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate for; ample an advantageous modification hich the arm 9 is bent at a slight angle to the-plane of the finger piece sothat its pointed extremity will contact at all times the surface of the bore.

In the modified embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 6, the follower is constructed of sheet metal stock. The holder 1 is providedv along a line diametrically opposite the slot 3 with a longitudinal groove or recess 11 and portions of the follower project into the slot 3 and the groove or recess 11 as guides. While the sleeve 8 is primarily designed to frictionally engage the insert and to hold the 1 same, it may also be so proportioned to exert some degree of pressure upon the surrounding surface of the bore 2 inorder that the insert will not move forward except when pressure is applied to the finger piece or projection 7. Should the insert be moved forward to too great an extent, it may be moved rearwardly by depressing the finger piece or projection 7, so as to move the projection 9 out of engagement with the wall of the bore 2 and to thus permit of the free rearward movement of the follower until the finger piece is release o While I have shown and described preferred forms of my present invention, it is to be understood that it is not limited to the precise forms shown, but contemplates broadly any construction within the scope of the appended claims.

claim: A
' 1. In a device of the character described, an elongated holder provided with a longitu dinal bore, a follower in said bore, having an arm provided with a rearwardly extending sharpened portion normally s ring pressed against the wall of the bore an means associated with said arm for positively moving said arm out of engagement with said wall.
2. In a device of the character described, an elongated holder having a longitudinal bore and a slot extending through the side of said holder and communicating with said bore, a follower in said bore, a spring arm carried by said follower having a sharpened extremity normally engaging the wall of said bore, and means associated with said arm and extending through said slot for moving said spring arm against the tension thereof out of engagement with said wall.
In a device of the character described, an elongated holder provided with a longitudinal bore and a slot extending through the side of said holder and communicating with said hrwo. 2i follower in said bore adapted to grasp a lead or other insert, a projection carried by said follower and extending through said slot and an arm normally spring pressed against the wall of the bore to prevent rearward movement of the said follower, said arm being adapted to be .thrown out of engagement with the said wall by mani ulation of the said projection, whereby sai follower may be moved rearwardly in said bore.
4. In a device of the character described, an elongated holder provided with a longitudinal bore extending therethrough and a slot extending through the side of said holder and communicating with said bore, a follower in said bore adapted to grasp a lead or other insert, a finger piece or projection carried by said follower extending through said slot and a rearwardly extending arm having a sharpened extremity normally spring pressed against the wall of the bore to prevent rearward movement of the said follower, said arm being adapted to be thrown out of engagement with said wall by manipulation of the said finger piece or projection, whereby said follower maybe moved rearwardly in said bore.
5. In a device-of the character described,
an elongated holder provided with a longitudinal bore extending therethrough and a slot extending through the side of said holder and communicating with said bore, and a fol-' lower in said bore com rising an integral section of wire, one end 0 which is bent into the form of a socket or sleeve to grasp the lead or other insert, and thepther end thereof sharpened and normally pressed against the side of the bore to prevent rearward movement of said holder or follower.
6. In'a device of-the character described, an elongated holder provided with a longitudinal bore extending therethrough and a slot extending through the side of said holder and communicating-with said bore, and a-follower adapted to grasp a lead or other insert,
