G. S. DEANL RAILWAY TIEL .20 Thepresentinvention has for its objects th" l ajnetallie railway tie of simple andeompara;
^ "UNITED-STATES PATENT OFFICE. v
o YaUs s. DEAN, OF BUFF rito, New YORK, ASSIGNOR or ONF-HALF To ALBERT D. JAMIESON,
OF BUFFALO,
NEW YORK. f
No.4 s595439.A
i To all? whom may co/nmcrn:
` Be it known that '1, Crans S. DEAN, a subject of the lKing oi Great Britain, residing at Buffalo, county of` 'Erieyandf Smm of New York, have invented'certain .5' ew another disadvantage incident to the use-of the-common wooden tie and also incident tothe use of xnetal ties is 'that their construction prohibits tainping of the material under the tio so that hollows exist, permitting the accumulation of water and rendering the road -bed unstable.
Further disadvantages of both wooden and metal ties heretofore used are the tendency of the ties, especially on curves, to,y it'liiitv lengthwise, thus causing a tendency toward accident and breakages.
` sion of tively' inexpensive construction which willy po great strength,` durability .and rigidity, permit tarn lows of theearth yand ballast thereunder so that'no will exist and sinking of4 the tie will-.be prei/e111 provide novel means for preventing en'dwisemov of theties andalso to brace the ties; to provide novel plateslforining lateral supports extending in d ireetion oQthealengthsef therails'to` provide a broad and lirm l 3 0 hearing and-support for the tiesto prevent sinkingthere-l oi and tolin'snre rigidity andto provide improved#fastenings ier' 'i iring the rails to the ties andfe tiesto the aforesaidsupports. Y v f y i lThe i4 vention is set l'orth in theiollowingspeeiiica- Figui l is a plan view showing my invention in use; Fig. V2l is an enlarged section taken transversely of the ties and longitudinally of thsupporting plates showing 40 th'e'rail and a part ofaiastening in lull lines; Fig. il is a cross-section on line 3453 of Fig. 2; Figr 4is a perspective detailof one ofthe supporting plates; Fig. 5, a perspeetive detail'of an end oia tie; Fig. 6,'a perspective detailof one of the fastenings; and Fig. 7, a perspective detail oi Vone ofthe combined braces and anchors to prevent longitudinal shifting of the ties. Ordinary railway rails are shown at l.
Tiesconstructed according to my invention are shown i at 2 and: they consists of a single piece of metal rolled i with longitudinal upwardly extending flanges 3 which are cut outhat 'f1 to forni a seat for the rail, said tie being provided with a central longitudinal [lange or web 5 which is preferably oi' the same width throughout its length. 'lhis web 5 gives great strength to the tie and it'also supports the tie when it is placed en the road-bed Specification o-Lettls Patent. Application nea June 21.21905. serial No. 322,724.

` so that the earth and ballast may be packed under the tie to support it, thus permitting this ballast or earth to be tainped under the tie from both sides thereof and in suring all of the spacebeing filled and no hollows being left ior the accumulation of water. I
My improved supporting plate (i, Whiclncxtelidsflengthwise of the rail, is provided with depending end flanges 7, a depressed seat 8 of a trifle more than th'- width of the tie 2, and a transverse depending boxQ o proper size to snugly receive 'the web 5 of` the tie. i
In th e tie and supporting plates there are iorined'open'- ings l() and 1 1 respectively for the receptiomof thrail fastenings, the openings 410 being elongated for the'liin'- troduction of the hook-shaped bolts l2 which are intro@ duced from above by tilting them'and passing them through the openings l0 and thence through openings 11,
but these openings Il() are elongated for the further purpose'of receiving the locking lug lli on the Washer'lt, said `lug preventing turning et the washer and'A washer being 'provided with an overhang'ing portiony 15 the ends ofthe ties and as they may approachcr l inpitra-I tively close to each other at their ends, there is provided .a very rigid trackway structure. i
To prevent any endwise motion or shitting OI the ties, something which is liable to oeeurnn curves, I provide anchors i7 consisting oi plates sunk into the roadfbed and having a [lange 18 which overlaps the ends of the ties and is secured thereto by bolts 19. These anchors also bracethe ties from each other. l'As many of the anchers may be employed as may be found desirable, but they need not necessarily be used on all` the ties, nor is it necessary that they bridge adjacent ties, as single or to engagethe top o theiail base. A nut i6 screws onto the threaded portion of the hook-shapedvbolt.; The supporting plates 6 afford a broad bearing or base for'v Sil individual anchois may be used at'the endsof any tie where desired.
In assembling the trackway structure, the ties faref' first placed vand the supporting plates mythen be slid in lengthwise in a manner which will be apparent froni,
Figs. 4 and 5, after which the ballast and earth may be ta inped and the rails'l'astened in POStOIl. The 'hfll 'may then be driven lhome and secured' to the ties. 1
Having thusdescribed my invention, vwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent', iszl. ln a railway trnckway, the combination with supporting:- plates extending lengthwise of tlievralls and having.,r transverse channels, ot ties, resting fiat on said plates securing the railst ties, und supporting plntcstogethej In a railway trackway, theA combination with snpporiini.: plates extending vided with n transverse elmnncl, of ties provided with ribs extending longitudinally thereof and received ln the channels aforesaid, and fastenings securing the rails, ties, and supporting plates together.
Ji. ln n railway trneliway, ihn combination with metallic vand having ribs received yin said channels. and fastenlngs lengthwise ofthe rails and pro` supporting plates extending lengthwiseV of the rails andprovided with transverse Seats and transverse channels,
` of channel metallic ties having a longitudinal rib on their underside J seid rib being received in said channels land* '.I'p'inte ehnnecting them together und extending downwardly therefrom into the road-bed. f l
6. The combination with e railway tie havingv an elongnted straight-Sided slot therein, and a. r:ii1,of a boitv extending through the tie, n washer on the holt and bearthe 'tie'and'hasa transverse rib under the channel-or seat ing on the rail, said washer being provided with a fintsidediugreceived in ane' engaging said slot, and a nut on the boit. l 7. rlvhe combination withwe railway tie having an elon gated slot, of i hok-shaped boit having a flattened shank extending through and'enga ging the sidesof saidsiot, said hook engaging the under side of the tie, :1 washei-.bearing on the rail, said washer beimg .provided with ahnt-sided ing which is received in end "engages the slot, and a nut on the boit .sind bearing on the` washer. v .l
. In testixiony whereof, I hereunto aihx my signature in presence "of two witnesses.- .A CYRUS S.'DEAN.
Witnesses l 4- SARAEYQ Locxwoon, ROIIANDQBQOTH.
