JOHN W. HURLEY, or PORTLAND, oareoN, Assrcuon or ONE-nature HENRY CLAY JORDAN.
MEAT-TENDERER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed August 18,1906. Serial No- 881,165-
To all 1 071,077? it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WESLEY HUR- LEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the a county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Meat-Tenderers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as constituting a part thereof.
This invention relates to kitchen implements of the character known as meattenderers, and used to render a steak of meat in a tender and more palatable condition, when to be broiled or fried; and the object of my invention is to overcome certain objectionable-features, and to make the device, as a whole, more simple and convenient to manipulate.
To this end my invention comprises oppositely disposed, hingedly connected jaws, the hinges being so arranged that the two jaws may readily be separated for the purpose of cleansing my device. Furthermore I rovide lever-like means, whereby the two aws may be compressed together, and by which the necessity for. fastening my device to a table, to facilitate its use, is done away with. Thearrangement and operation of my device being as illustrated in the drawings above referred to, and hereinafter described.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective of my device, the upper jaw being raised tothe position permitting a steak of meat to be placed on the lower jaw Fig. 2 is a partial cross-section, showing the staggered arrangement of the teeth of the respective jaws, so as to be able to pass each other, upon the com pression of the jaws; Fig. 3 is a partial plan view showing the arrangement of the hinges, whereby the jaws are -removably united; Fig. 4 is a partial end view, looking in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 3, and illustrating the construction of the righttail of the right-hand hinge-knuckle a; and Fig. 6 is a partial longitudinal section illustrating the lever-like means for compressing ere with each other,
thejaws.
Referring now to the reference lollelsr. The aws a, b, are cast. with teeth a, and
hinge-knuckles w. a", I), I). The hingeknuckles a, c are pvI'l'ul'nl-ml. and the hingoknuckles I), b are provided will: pintlcs d,
Thus the to be inserted insuch perforation.
two jaws, a, b, can be separated by moving the same laterally in opposite directions. To prevent the same becoming accidentally dislaced, and thus causin the teeth to inter rovide retaining means, whereby the lateral separation of the two jaws, on their hin es is prevented until the jaw b is thrown ack to the position thereof indicated in dotted outline b in Fi' 4. Such retaining means consist in rovi ing the hinged lug a with a latera ly projecting arm a made with a pendent lug or shoulder (1, arranged to engage'with the face of the hinge-lug b asillustratetl in Figs. 3 and 4. And the hinge-knuckle b has a recess 6 arranged as shown in Fig. 4, so that when the jaw b is thrown'into the position gagelwith a shoulder h, formed on the front end of the lower aw 2). Thus by hearing down on the handl e of the lever f, the jaws a, b, are compressed with considerable force. In the use of my device, the teeth will perforate the meat compressed between the jaws sufficiently to allow the heat to penetrate the meat more effectively, and the steak maybe cooked to the degree desired to render the same juicy and palatable.
I claim:
1. In a meat tenderer, the combination of a pair of jaws provided with teeth on their inner faces, and respectively made with hinge joints by which the jaws are separably.
hinged, means for locking the hinge joints against inadvertent separation, lever-like means pivoted on the front end of one jaw and arranged to engage with the front end of the other, to forcibly compress the jaws.
2. A meat tei'ui-erer comprising a pai.rof' jaws provided with teeth on their inner faces, one thereof being made with erforated hinge-knuckles, and the other with hingeknucklcs provided with projecting reniovably inserted in the perforated other member, and the latt pair of hinge-knuckles being arran means preventing inadvertent brou disengagement and consistin in one member of said pair of hinge-knuek es being made with a rigid. projectmg arm having a lug on its extremity arranged to engage with the er having a recess knuckles; one provided with Witnesses ed to allow the lug to pass when t in alinement therewith.
JOHN W. HURLEY.
