Description

atent-N SAMUEL Lewis, or BROOKLYN,inno,,New vom@ Letters Patent N0. `85,598, dated January 5, 1869,`
ADJUSTABLE STILL-WATER. DAM
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thesarxxe.`
To ali/whom. 'it lnur/y concern Be itknown that I, SAMUEL Lewis, of Brooklyn, E.;D., in thecounty of Kings, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Adjustable StillfWatcr Dam; and 'I do hereby declare that the following is` a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis speciiicat-ion.
`This invention relates to new and important improvements in a portable adjustable still-water dam, for which Letters Patent were granted me i ou the 28th day `of July, 1868; and .The invention and improvement consist in an arrangement whereby the boat or float, or vessel bearingthe machinery, may be-raised clear of the water, and be anchored to the bottoni oil a stream by long timbers or spnds, as will be hereinafter more fully described. i i
y The present applicant, deeming the dam above `referred to susceptible of improvement in certain parts and particulars, has added thereto the devices herein shown and explained. I
The apparatus aforesaid, as patented, was defective inthat the area of resisting-surface presented to the current by the hulls of adouble or single boat, iraft, float, for staging, was liable to throw too mfuch strain upon the anchors, which strain, varying with the varying intensities of the current or tidal flow, would interfere somewhat with that rigid steadiness so essential to the operation of drilling under water. l
'.lhe applicant also, upon reiiection, concluded that the self-anchors in said patented dam might be greatly assisted by `an extension ofthe principle, iu the shape 0f spuds of greater strength, and set wider apart, with the entire weight of the boat or boats, raft, lioat, or staging, brought to bear upon them, by the elevation of the heating structure entirely out of the water, which would at once greatly reduce the surface exposed to the action of the current, and impart a far iiriner holdiof the spudsor vertical anchors to the bed of the stream.
VFigure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a boat, or other support for 4the mechanism, theiboxes or guides through which the spnds or vertical anchois,` marked 3, slide, the mechanism for raising the hull or staging, and for retaining the same in an elevated position when its bulk has been raised from the water, and its entire weight thrown upon the verticalanchors or spuds,
`'lhe left-hand side of g. 1 represents the boxer guide 6, with its attachments, as viewed from the red line z z, Figure 4, and is duplicated in anenlarged size in `lliigllre 3. i .y Y
i The right-hand side of `fig. l representsthe same box or guide as bisected vertically by the red line x x, iig. 4, Aand isshown enlarged in Figure 2. A 0
Fig. 4 is a deck or plan View, showing the central opening, to correspond to the telescopio or collapsible dam described in thefpatent"nforesaifhthe situations oi' the spuds, the direction and connection of the shafting, and a top `view of the machinegenerally,
rlhe shafting takes the power at X ,`the revolution heilig from the top inward. i i
It will be seen thatoutsideof each box `or guide, on each of` the shafts 44, is apinion, 7, which gears into thewheelS. y 'i y This pinion is slotted as iflfora key, whilethe shaft` has a corresponding, rib or feather under the` wheel 8,` which, while the lntterand pinion 7 are in gear-makes it ai'astpinion; but when the boat orhloat has been-` raised and tast-cned in position, this pinion'^is,"byma'` shifting-lever, or otherwise, thrown ontof gear, onlto` thesrnooth part ofthe shaft, and becomesa loose pinion, thus setting the: shaitingfree to operateother attachments for working the drills; y
The spnds dba-ving been lowered to,thefaceofthek rock, and the pon-"erput on it, it will be seen'that the; pinion 7 will belope-rated, which in its turnmweshthe` whcelS, the motioinoi which againis communicated to wheel 9, on the shaft or axleof `which,`and insidef the box or guide`,^is the pinionlO. y "i L The revolution of the latter, gearing intoMthemetallic rack 9, forming one facejoi the spud, raises the boat or float to ahy desiredheight, andlbrings the en-1 tireweight of theV upper works `upon thel spuds, thus imparting to Athe latter a iirm holdon the bottom, while removing the boat entirely beyond the actionofthe current. i. l, When the elevati n has been completed, the handle 12 is pnt down, and the partial revolution of lthe, eccentriconbthe plate 24,as shown, draws thestop-rack 14 into gear with the face of the spud, when the pinion 7 is thrown out ot gear, as beforeilnentioned, and the boat .stands on the spnds as upon legs, whilst-he shalt-1 ingis iee tobc used, as before stated, for driving the drills. i y l, V i
Inside of thebox or guide, at 13 I13, are seentwo friction-rollers, to give steadinessz and free action to; the` guides on` the spnds, ,while the eye in 'the` upper y end of the piece 15 is seen to have some play, to compensate. for the varying curves described by the i several parts of the clutch, `composed of parts 11, 14, 16, 17, and18, as seen in g. 3. i l ,t
When the handle 12 is raised, the spud and stop-` rack are thrown ont of gear, and the boat is't-hen free to descend to its `first oatingpostiom i l, R i The spuds, as shown, are` shod `t their lower ends with a cast-iron casing, or asolideud, 20,fnwwhich"i`s a sheave and pulley, 22,as` shown, through which a chain is intended to pass from the lower sectionof the telescopic dam aforesaid to a windlass on deckyasa means of imparting additional steadincss to said dam; The solid ends i or casings` aforesaid-are, as seenat 21, nished with points of steel,` y, l i
Having thus described my invention, 2. The clutch, composed of the parts 11, 14, 16, 17, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters and 18, with the handle 12, constructed substantially Patent- :is shown, and for the purpose specified. l. The combination of a boat, oat, rait, or staging, The above speoilication o1" my invention signed by with spuds or vertical anchors, constructed and operme, this 1st day of October, 1868.
