Description

' PATENTED JUNE .4, 1907.
WITNESSES INVENTOR,
Alzomeys 1n: NORRIS PEYERS co.. WASHINGTON, n.
ADOLPH L. BERGSTEN, OF MOUNT UNION, IOWA.
FASTENER FOR DOORS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed February 21, 1906. Serial No. 302,246.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADoLPH L. BERGsTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Union, in the county of Henry, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Nest- Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fasteners for nest doors and has for its object to provide a fastener of such character that the nest may be used, when desired, as a trap nest although the fastener may be arranged in inoperative position when it is merely desired to exclude other hens from the nest.
To this end the invention resides in. the provision, on one side of the nest, of a resilient latch member which is arranged at its free end for engagement with a pin carried by the nest door and is provided with a laterally projecting stud which is adapted to be seated interchangeably in the opening formed in the side of the nest to hold the latch member either in position to automatically latch the door when the same is closed or in elevated or in inoperative position.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of anest showing my latch applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the nest, and, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the latch device removed from the nest.
hile I do not claimthe nest itself as my invention, I will herein describe the same in order to illustrate the function and operation of the latch, the latch being particularly designed for use in connection with a nest of the character shown.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes a box-like structure closed at one of its ends and open at the other of its ends and provided with a door 6 of any desired construction, the said door being hinged. to one side of the open end of the structure 5 as at 7. Disposed in the box 5 at the rear or closed end thereof is a nest 8 and secured within the box at its forward or open end is a weight 9 of any suitable material.
Extending transversely of'the box and secured to the underside thereof is a strip 10 which is triangular in cross section. From the foregoing, it will be seen that normally the box rests upon its forward edge and the strip 10 with the door in an open position, and that when a hen enters the nest, thebox 5 will be tilted to rest upon the strip 10 and its rear edge, thereby resulting in the closing of the door of the nest.
Pivoted to one side of the box 5 as at 11 is a latch device formed of a strand of spring wire 12 which has its free end turned downwardly at right angles as at 13 and thence upwardly at an acute angle, as at Formed upon the wire 12 intermediate its.
portion 13 and its pivotal point is a lug 15 which is arranged for engagement in either one of a pair of recesses 16 in the side of the box. A pin 17 is carried by the outer edge of the door 6 and is adapted for engagement behind the right angularly bent portion 13 of the wire 12, it being understood that the lug 15 rests in the lowermost recess 1.6, thereby preventing pivotal movement of the latch device, but allowing a slight movement of the free end thereof by reason of the resiliency of the wire 12. Should it not be desired to use the nest as a trap-nest, the latch device 12 is swung upon its pivot and the lug 15 engaged in the uppermost recess, 16.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a box and a door for the box, of a latch pivoted to the said box, a pin carried by the said door and arranged for engagement in the said latch, and a lug carried by the said latch and arranged for engagement in recesses in said box whereby the said latch may be held in and out of position for engagement with said pin.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a box and a door for the box, of a latch for the door, said latch being formed of a single piece of wire pivoted to the box and having its outer end portion turned downwardly at right angles and thence upwardly at an acute angle, and being provided with a lug intermediate its ends for engagement in recesses in said box. I
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPH L. BERGSTEN.
