ADJESTABLE OUTLET BOX. APPLIUATION' rzLzin FEB. 24, 1905.
I the borough of Manhattan, in the county and .r=rrrrr f nn s'rarns PATENT omen ax n BARON, or Bononcn or MANHATTAN, NEW 'Yonx.
nouusrsers U s ecification of Letters Patent.
owner-sex.
Patented May 28, 190"? To all whom'zlt may-concern.-
Be it known that'l, Max D. BARON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of State of New Yorkfl have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Outlet-Boxes, of which the following fication. This invention. relates to outlet boxes for use in house wiring. In this type of box. it
is essential that a complete fire proof inplosure be provided for the electric connec-J tions; of line wires inclosed-in conduits within the walls of the building and the teri'ni nals of some electric instrument outside of v the box, while at the same time providing a properly located outlet opening from the box to' the said electric instrument and a support for the. same. In modern ractice these boxes are installed during this con struction of the building and necessarily before the finish or decorations can he accurately determined.
In many types ofboxes; the outlet 0 enin or receptacle socketofthebox is ed relatively to the body'portion or at best is capable of but slight adjustment relatively thereto. Thus, as a result, when the installation is complete and the walls of the building are subsequently finished the exposed outlet opening or race tacle socket isfrequently oiiset a consi erable amount from its pro or position relatively to the finish oi. the we Is and consequently the electr'ioinstrumcnt when attached is offset an unsightly distance. A readjustment with this type of box would involve great inconvenience and expense. The slight degree of adjustability sometimes provided in boxes is quite inadequate in most instances as the ofiset of a box is frequentl as much as an inch in both vertical and orizontal directions. The box also may be several degrees askew.
The advantage of a box with an adjustable outlet opening or sookethas long been recognized and many more or loss unsuccessi'ul attempts have been made to provide such a box. Their chief defects have been a prolixity of complex and inexpensive parts which at best furnished inadequate adjust ment.
An object of the present invention is to is a speci- .s'essing a wide range of lateral androtary adjustability and which shall possess acl'osed interior ior all adjustments. of the receptacle opening. A preferred embodiment of this invention is illustrated in the drawings forming. partof this specification and in which lilre nurner als designate corresponding parts in which .oi the box; Fig. 2 18 a front elevation of the l )ody portion; Fig. 3 is a plan of the assem: bleo box showing the body portion in dotted i lines Referring now more particularly to the drawings,-l designates! the body portion of the box of any 'approved construction, provided withhnock-out' ortions 2 to provide for the entrance of con uits. The outer face 4 and maybe adjusted in any. position within its confines and be fixed in position-to give access therethrough to the, interior of the body portiortil; To accomplish this, the
so that theportions dproject laterally between the corncrs of the bodyv ortion. .A clamping member 12, illustrate as a ring,
clam s the cover portion 6 to the body portion y means of screws 13 entering the holes 5. This clamping member 12 serves also to retain the cover portion '6 attachedto the body portion 1 even though the same is not tightly clamped thereto, thus retaining'thc various parts in assembled relation.
As may be seen in the drawings the screws 13 permit a considerable play 0 the projectin portions 8 of the plate 7. This 'p aypro vi es for a lateral ad ustment of the socket 9 in all directions within the confines of the opening 4 as well. as for a limited rotary adjustment. r
The contour of the plate Tailor 1115i be deter ,1 Figure l is a plan view of the body portion 3 of'tbe box-presents'a somewhat'restricted ,1th*pro- Theope'ning 10 is smaller thanthe' opening cover portion 6 is located upon the body por- 4:- tion 1 with the plate '7 in con-tact therewith "although it maybe of any suitable-form,
mined by'the relative-size of the openings 4 and and should be such as to employ a minimum amount of material and always cover the opening 4 no matter What the ad'- justment 0 the cover and its socket 9 may be. That is the cover 6 must always be in closing position for all adjustments. A pre- I ferred contour of the plate 7 is illustrated in 3. he box may be made by any approved process, such as casting or stamping, and v may be of any suitable material, such ar iron.
' Although the embodiment of the invention, its-illustrated and described, is preferred, the
invention is capable of much modification in detail.-- It is not essential that the openings tion 1 be integral therewith.
Many other modifications are Within the scope of my invention as, for-example, the proportioning of the openings 4 and 10, and the various parts of the box might be such as to allow the opening 10 to overlap the sides of the opening 4.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A Wall box, comprising a body portion, an adjustable cross shaped cover portion, and 'a clampin member secured to the con ners of said bo y portion to clamp said. cover portion in position.
2 Anbutlet box, comprising a body portion having a restricted front opening, an adjustable cross shaped cover portion having a centrally located open throat piece, and a clamping member secured to said body portion to clamp said cover portion in position. 3. An out et box, comprising a body portion, an adjustable cross shaped cover portion, and a clamping member secured to the corners of said body portion to clamp said cover portion in position, said cover portion having a Wide range of lateral and rotary adjustability.
4. An outlet box, comprising a body portion having a restricted front opening, and adjustable cross shaped cover portion having a centrally located open-throat piece and a clamping member secured to the corners of said body portion to clamp said cover portion in position, said cover portion having a Wide re oi" lateral and rotary adjust'ability.
'5. furoutlet box, comprising a bodyportion, an adjustable cross shaped cover portion, and a clamping ring secured to the corners of said body portion to clamp said cover portion in position.
6. An outlet box, comprising a body por' tion having a restricted front opening, an adj ustable cross shaped cover portion'having a centrally located open throat piece, and a clamping ring secured to the corners of said body portion to clamp said cover portion in position.
7. An outlet box, comprising a body portion, an adjustable cross shaped cover portion, and a clamping ring secured to the corners of said body portion to clamp said cover portion in position, said cover portionhaving a wide range of lateral and rotary adjustability while in closingposition.
8. An outlet box, comprising a body portion having a restricted front opening, and adjustable cross shaped cover portion having a centrally locatedopen throat piece, and a clamping ring secured to the corners of said body portion to clamp said cover portion in position, said cover portion having a wide range of lateral and rotary adj ustability While in closing position.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
