EDWARD T. FORD AND FRANK F. WASSAM, OF DUNKIRK, INDIANA.
COMBINED CROSS-TIE AND RAIL-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907.
Application filed March 26, 1907. Serial No. 364,611.
To (z/ZZ 11/71/0772, it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD T. FORD and FRANK F. VVASSAM, citizens of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Jay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cross-Ties and Rail-Fastenings; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cross ties and fastenings forsecuring rails thereto, and comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
lVe illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a tie made in accordance with our invention and rails held by our improved fastening device. Fig'. 2 is a cross sectional view longitudinally through the tie and fastening device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the fastening members, and Fig. 4 is a detailview of a joint connection.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, A designate railway ties made preferably of metal and each of which is cut away at its central portion, forming a rib A. Each end of the tie has an aperture B formed therein for the reception of bolt C, the end of the bolt being preferaably angular-outlined to conform to the shape of the hole formed through the head of the tie. Each head of the tie is provided with transverse slits D, which are spaced apart, and each is adapted to receive a flanged plate E which is apertured to receive a bolt. Each of said plates E is bent at right angles forming a shoulder E designed to rest in a recess a formed in the top of a tie, so that when said shoulder rests in the recess, the upper surface of the shoulder will be flush with the top of the tie upon which the flange of the rail rests. The flanged ends of said plates engage over the flange of the rail, as shown. In order to allow the nuts N to be easily screwed upon the bolts, said ribs are cut 5 5 away as at 0.
here the rails come together, we provide plates J which are shaped to conform to the flange and web of the rail against which they are held by bolts I passing through registering apertures therein and in the webs of the rails. Depending from the lower portion of each plate J are the wings J 2 each of which is apertured to receive a bolt which is inserted in registering apertures in said wings in the manner shown in the drawings, and the portion of each plate intermediate its wings is bent underneath the bottoms of the rails, as shown clearly in the drawings.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that by the provision of the tie and clamping device shown and described, a simple and eflicient means is afforded for securely holding railway rails to ties, and also connecting the ends of the rails. Should it be desired for any purpose to replace the plates, the bolts may be first loosened and the plates slipped out through the slits formed in the ties without disturbing the rails.
WVhat we claim is 1. A rail fastening device comprising, in combination with the ties having slits formed therein, bolts passing transversely through said slits in the ties and held by the latter, and rail clamping plates having each an aperture therein to receive a bolt, each plate being seated in one of said slits, as set forth.
2. In combination with a tie having slits therein, bolts passing through apertures formed transversely through said slits, and clamping plates having angled flanges de si ned to engage the flange of a rail, each plate positioned in a slit and provided with an aperture to receive a bolt, as set forth.
3. A rail fastening device comprising, in combination with the ties having slits formed therein, bolts passing transversely through said slits in the ties and held by the latter, each plate bent to form a shoulder adapted to rest in a recess formed in the top of the tie, the upper portions of said plates engaging the flanges of a rail, as set forth.
i. In combination with a plurality of ties having transverse slits formed therein, bolts passing through the walls of said slits, and
rail engaging plates having wings extending into said slits and apertured to receive said bolts, the portions of said plates intermediate said wings extending underneath the bottoms of the rails, as set forth.
5. In combination with a metallic tie, the central portion of which is cut away forming a rib with recesses formed therein, the upper surface of said tie having transverse slits, bolt holes passing transversely through said slits in the ties, theheads of the bolts being adapted to be held from rotation by the angular-outlined hole in the tie, rail clamping plates fixed to the rails and seated in said slits and provided with apertures to receive said bolts, and nuts mounted upon the ends of said bolts, as set forth' In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
