APPLIOATIDN FILED F153. 5. 1906.
SYLENA A. DUNCAN, OF NESHANIC STATION, NEW JERSEY.
DRESS-SHIELD FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Batent.
Patented J an. 22, 1907.
. Application filed February 5, 1906. Serial No. 299.555.
description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices, and particnlarly to a dress-shield fastener.
The object of the invention is the provision of means for facilitating the fastening of a dress-shield to a garment.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dress -shield, showing attached thereto a pair of fasteners constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank fastener before it is folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener depicted in Fig. 2, showing the same folded and attached to a dress-shield, the dress-shield being shown in fragmentary perspective. Fig. 4 is a plan view of another embodiment of the fastener before it is folded, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the same when folded. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Figs. 2 and 4 of another embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the same when folded. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view, in side elevation, of the fastener depicted in Figs. 2 and 3, showing clearly the means common to all the embodiments by which the fasteners are secured to the dress shield.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown three embodiments of a fastener in the accompanying drawings, each one being provided with a body portion 1, an overlapping tongue 2, and jaws 3 3.
While the general construction of the fasteners is the same. in all of the embodiments, each embodiment is provided with slightlydifferent penetrating means or points by means of which the fastener isfiXedly secured to the dress-shield and garment.
Referring particularly to Fig. 2, the blank is provided with burs stamped or punched from thebody 1, jaws 3, and tongue 2. The bo dy portion 1 is provided with a downwardlyeXtending bur 4, and the tongue 2 is provided wit-h a bur 5. The bur 5 projects upwardly when the tongue 2 is in its normal parallel position with the body 1, Fig. 8. In each embodiment the means for securing the fastener to the dress-shield is the same. Tosecure the fastener to the dress-shield D, the outer end 6 is passed through the dressshield and is bent on line 7 for placing the end 6 in substantially parallel position with the body 1, Fig. 8. Before the end 6 is folded into its parallel position, however, the tongue 2 is bent under the body 1 for positioning said tongue parallel with the body, and thereby causing bur 5 to register with bur 4, and when the burs are clamped to gether by any suitable implement the teeth or penetrating means securely grip the shield D, thereby preventing the fastener from being disengaged therefrom. After thetongue 2 has been placed in its normal position, Fig. 8, the end 6 is clamped against the outer surface of the tongue 2. The tongue 2 is preferably bent on line 8.
In the embodiment depicted in Figs. 2 and 3 burs 9 are formed upon the inner face of the jaws 3, near the lower ends thereof. These burs constitute penetrating means or points, whereby when the jaws are clamped together the garment positioned therebetween will be positively gripped, thereby preventing the dress-shield from becoming displaced from its adjusted position. All
.of the fasteners are formed of pliable material, which permits the bending thereof forforming the finished device after the same has been stamped or cut from asheet. If it is desired, the blank may be formed from resilient material, so that the jaws will have a spring action for clamping the garment for supporting the shield D.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5, the jaws 3 are provided with teeth 10, formed upon their edges. These teeth are bent on lines 11 11 for positioning the teeth at substantially right angles to the jaws 3. The teeth 10 constitute penetrating means or points.
The jaws 3 .(depicted in Figs. 6 and 7) are provided not only with the teeth 10, but also with alined horizontal burs 12, which are formed upon the jaws above the lines 13, at which the teeth are bent at right angles in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 is v provided with two different specific penetrating means-to wit, a horizontal row of teeth and a horizontal row of burs.
Each embodiment comprises a sheet-metal fastener or clasp, Which is preferably struck or stamped in the shape of a cross, and each section or portion of the cross is provided with points or penetrating means, as hereinbefore described,
What I claim is 1. A device of the character described, comprising a' body portion, a tongue bent backwardly against the body portion and cooperating therewith to form a means for securing the device in position, an end of the body portion being returned upon itself so as to iit against the before-mentioned tongue, and a pair of gripping-jaws formed in connection with the body portion.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a body portion, a tongue bent backwardly against the body portion and cooperating therewith to form a means for Se curing the device in position, and a pair of oppositely-disposed jaws formed in conjunction with the body portion, and provided with penetrating members.
3. A device of the character described,
comprising a body portion provided with a penetrating member, a tongue bent back-v wardly against the body portion and cooperating with the penetrating member to form a means for securing the device in position, an end of the body portion being returned upon itself so as to fit against the tongue, and apair of oppositely-disposed jaws formed in conjunction with the body portion and provided with means for engagement with a garment.
4, A device of the character described, formed from a cruciform blank and comprising an elongated body portion, a tongue at one end of the body portion and adapted to be bent backwardly thereagainst and cooperatetherewith to form a means for securing the device in position, and a pair of oppo sitely-disposed gripping-jaws which are bent at angles to the body portion andare provided'upon their adjacent faces with penetrating means for engagement with a garment. g In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence oftwo Witnesses.
