FOLDING SHAVING BRUSH.

HENRY MERRYMAN RYNEHART, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING SHAVING-BRUSH.
Application filediAprilZFJ, 1906- Serial No, 313.573. i
To all 2072,0117. it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MERRYMA RYNEHART, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Im proved Folding Shaving-Brush, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of shaving-brush wherein while the handle remains attached to the body of the brush at all times the handle may be closed around the body of the brush when the brush is not in use to shorten said brush and protect the bristles.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the brush with the handle-section folded over the bristles. 2 is a vertical section through the brush, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central side elevation of the brush open for use. Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a slightly-modified form of the brush, showing the handle open and the brush in position for use. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the handle represented as closed around the bristles, and Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken practically on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
The brush consists of a body or ferrule sec tion A, in which the buttends of the bristles B are secured, and a handle 0. The handle C is made in two hollow sections 10 and 11, and preferably the sections are semicircular in cross-section. The outer end of each section is entirely closed by a cap 12, while smaller caps 13 partially close the inner or opposing ends of the handle-sections, as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
When the sections 10 and 11 are brought together around the body, they will entirely surround the body of the brush and the bristles carried thereby, as is shown in Fig. 2, and when the brush is to be used the handlel sections are carried to a point below the body A and are brought together, and in this posi- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1907.
tion they constitute the handle of the 'brush when the brush is to be used.
The sections 10 and 11 of the handle are provided with hinges 14 at the inner edges of the shorter caps 13, and these hinges 14 are attached in any suitable or approved manner to the outer end of the body or ferrule section A at points adjacent to its sides, -as is clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
In orderto hold the two sections 10 and 11 of the handle C either in their closed or in their open positions, I provide a locking device located at the outer ends or at the heads 12 of the said sections. One form of catch or locking device which may be employed consists of a bail or link 15, hinged to one section of the handle, which link or bail is adapted to engage with a post 16, carried by the opposing section of the handle, and in order that the handle can be held without cutting the hand when the brush is to be used each section at each longitudinal edge is provided with a bead 17, as is shown in Fig. 1, which renders the said sections perfectly smooth at said longitudinal edges.
When the brush is not required for use, the sections of the handle are carried up in direction of each other until their longitudinal edges meet, whereupon the sections of the handle completely surround and inclose the bristles, rendering the brush very short when folded and at the same time preventing the bristles from being injured.
The sections of the handle are held in their closed position (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) by means of the aforesaid latch device.
When the brush is needed for use, the link 15 is disengaged from the post 16, and the handle- sections 10 and 11 are then carried down below the body A until their side faces are brought together, as is shown in Fig. 3, and in this manner a perfect handle is obtained for the brush, and the sections of the handle are again locked in position by the aforesaid fastening device.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a slight departure in the construction of the device, wherein the head or ferrule A has bristles B secured therein, and a tubular handle C is employed. The handle C is cylindrical and is made in two equal sections 17 and 18, connected at one longitudinal edge by hinges 19. A segmental spring 20 is located within the ger-piece 23 and acts not only as a latch, but
also forces the spindle-section 18 to the open position shown in Fig. 4.
The sections 17 and 18 are provided with segmental end pieces 24 and 25, and when the sections are closed corresponding end pieces engage, and a casing is thereby formedfor the reception of'the ferrule A and bristles B, the ferruleA being provided with a central hinge 26, which is connected with the inner edge-portion ofone of the end pieces 24.
When the brush is to be used, the sections 17 and 18 are opened and the ferrule A is swung over upon the plate 244, to which it is hinged, as is shown in Fig. 4, and then the two sections are closed and locked" together to form the handle C.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shaving-brush and a handle therefor, which handle is in sections, and a hinged connection between each section of the handle and. the body of the brush.
2. A shaving-brush and a handle for the same, which handle is constructed in two hollow sections, hinge connections between the sections of the handle and the body of the brush, whereby said sections may be folded upward around the bristles of the brush to protect the same, or be folded down below the body of the brush for use as a handle, and a locking device for the said handle-sections.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY MERRYMAN RYNEHART.
