HOOK AND EYE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1, 1907.
Application filed February 8,1906. Serial No. 300.1 67.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH S. C. SOWAR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brazil, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Hooks and Eyes; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, whic form a part of this specification.
The invention has relation to hooks and eyes for garments and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth. 2
The object of the invention is mainly to provide improved means for concealing the metal of the hooks and eyesused in fastening garments, and particularly the ends of such hooks and eyes which are apt to be visible in an ungainly manner at the backs of dresses and the like.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows my invention as applied, the hook being in plan view. Fig. 2 is .a detail perspective view of the hook, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the same.
In the drawings, the letter a designates an eye, which may be of ordinary character, overlaid by the hook in the fastening.
1) indicates the hook, which is provided with an extension or extensions h of its base portion (1, said extension projecting in front of the bend c of the hook, but lying in the plane of the base. The extension h of the base is provided with eyes or loops h for attachment of the fastening-thread in sewing the hook to the cloth of the overlap z of the The base of the hook is also provided with rear loops g, as usual. .In this manner the beak or catch 7c of the hook is 10- cated at about the middle of the base.
As shown in Fig. 2, the hook may be made of a single piece of wire having the central bend 'm forming the beak, the arms or branches 0 of the hook being bent toward the base, and thence rearward in the plane of the base (1 beyond the hook at 0 where to the same extent they are bent forward to provide the fastening-loops g, the branches of which extend forward at g, one outside and one inside of the branches 0 of the hook and in the same plane as said branches 0 and the loops The branches 9 extend forward past the hook at h to'the same extent to provide the fastening-eyes h, forming the terminations of the piece of wire, and being also in the plane of the branches 0 and g and of the loops 9 and forming the'base d.
One of the branches g is provided with a hump or guard bend 'v to aid in preventing separation of the hook and eye, this branch being located between the two branches 0 of the hook and braced thereby. The other branch g is located outside the hook branches 0.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A garment-hook, consisting of a single piece of Wire havin a central bend to form the hook, the branc esilof which have equal rearward extensions past the hook having each a terminal fastening-loop, such loops having equal forward-extending branches one inside and one outside of the branches of the hook and past the hook having each a terminal fastening-eye.
2. A garment-hook, consistingj'of a single piece of wire havin a central bend-to form the hook, the branc es of which have equal rearward extensions past the hook having each a terminal fastening-loop, such loops having equal forward-extending branches one inside and one outside of the branches of the hook and past the hook having each a terminal fastening-eye, the inside branch of the loop having a hump bend.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
