, i No. 840,255..
'5Be it known that we, .HUGH REID and DA-` Lanark, Scotland, (whose postal addresses are, respectively, Hyde Park Works, Springburn, Glasgow, and 2 Sunnyside avenue, Udding* stqn, Scotland,) havel invented certain'v new anduseful Improvements inLocomotives, and
' of which the following is a' specification.. i l This invention relates to condensing steam- 'electric locomotives 'of the type'described in our United States Patent specification No.
i' 805,999, of 1905, and has for its .object to provide aicondensing systemalternative to that fdescribed in our saidspeciiication and such that the apparatus as a whole, whilepossessing all the advantages of that described, is of' I eater advanta e under certain conditionssuch, for examp e, asfwhe're-the power tojbe developed relativelyto' the space at disposal for the' apparatus is sofgreat that a suilicient area for the installation ofan effective air cooled condenser is not available. y
. Accordingto oui present inventionwe apply instead of the air-cooled condenser of our earlier speciiication a condenser in which water'is the cooling or condensimlr medium and which may be of any suitable xlmown form, and for cooling the water which has beenused in the condenser (and in some cases also the condensed steam) we provide any suitable known form of cooling ap aratus in which air is used as the cooling me ium.
The cooling and condensinfr apparatus, or either of them, may be carried upon the locomotive, or the wholepr any part may be carried upon a separate `tru,c,l: or trucks, as may also be a supply of water -toy make up for losses in the condenser or elsewhere.
The air which has been heated by passinothrough the cooling apparatus may be utilized in the steam-generato;` to maintain a draft either with or without further preliminary heatingfor example,
in a heater arranged in the smoke-box.
The water-cooling apparatus may be ofl any suitable known type, and the cooling-air ma be circulated throuvhvitby the assage of t `ie locomotive throu the atmosp ere, or alternatively, or in ad ition the air may be Speciication of Letters Patent; l' Application fina may 18,1906.

The dynamo C is driven by a turbine E, in this case of the Curtis type, directly connected to it, and steam is plied to the turbine by a boiler F of locomotive type, placed with its fire-box toward the center of t ie vehicle.
The exhaust-steam from the turbine E passes by an exhaust-pipe G to a jet-condenser' H, operated by pumps J, drawing .from a su ply-tank K, arranged at the lower )i't of tie front end of the structure and elivering the mixed steam, condensing, andj lings O, the sizeof which may be adjuste l lby arranged longitudinally in them isl of the manner of p'er- 'erence-letters indicate like parts, show somesupa sing o enlocomotive is carried IOO sliding-doors. 'llhe cooled vater from the screens descends -into the tank K, from which itis drawn by the pum s J, as described, and by feed-pumps P the connection of which is not shown) for boiler-feeding,
' the tank K being of a capacity sufcient to make up for any losses there may be during the length of run for which the locomotive is L designed. Vacuum is of course maintained in the condenser by the pumps J.
vA turbine-operated b ower R is provided for the boiler-fire and feed-Water heater S.
p The locomotive is o erated from the driv inastation D, Whic communicates with w t maybe termed the engine-room at the center bya central passage through the coolincompartment, (Within which are ardistributing the'water tothe coohngapparatus-or a surface condenser and the requlsite pumps may be used, in which case the' conensing-Water and the` Water of ,condensation do not, of course, becomemixed until -th yare delivered to the supplytank. *35.
