Be known that .I, I'IARRY S. McCon- MACK, a; citizen'of the United States, residing 1n Providence, inthe'county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the followin -is a specification. I
. Ihis invention relates principally to special mechanism. used in type-writing machines -for moving the, paper in line-space direction.
In my pending application, Serial No. 245,916, filed February 16,1905, is illustrated mechanism for condensed charging, in
which a long record-sheet remains in the machine during the insertion, writing, and removal of a succession of bills or small sheets. After a written bill is removed the platen is rotated backwardly, a new bill inserted, and then the platen is rotated forwardly to bring the new bill into position for writing the first line thereon.
. One of the objects of thepresent invention is to make provision for leavingeither a narrow or wide space or interval between successive entries upon ,the record-sheet as may be desired.
A further object is to provide means for enablin the platen at any time to be rotated forward through a mechanically-limited predetermined arc of a variable extent far eyond the ca acity of the usual line-s acin mechanism, W ereb the machine is a apte for addressing envelbps or for beginning the writin accurately at any predetermined oint i ar below'lhe' topedge of a sheet. In carrying out this art of my invention 1 provide a crank whic is normally disconnected from the platen with means for connecting the platen to the crank, so that the. initial rotation of. the crank will cause the platen to move either backwardly or forwardly, according to the purpose for which the mechanism is being used, said means preferably includlng reversible geanng between said crank and the platen.

The hackward movement of the crank, however, continued until it reaches the fixed stop 50, so that the foot is carried back past more line-spaces, and hence the forward stroke is made greater than the rearward stroke theicof, so that the record-sheet is advanced automatically one or more line-spaces, insuring that the first line of the new bill shall not be Written over or upon the last line of the preceding record.
Upon releasing the crank the latter is iven a start forward by means of a spring inger 69, which is fixed upon the crank-shaft by means of a screw 70 and collar 70*. This spring rotates idly with said crank-shaft, but at the latter part of the return movement of said shaft aroll 69 on the spring engages a sloping edge 71 and is thereby put under sufficient tension, so that when the crank is released from the control of the operator the spring 69 retracts the shaft, gear, and crank until the foot or stop 43 reaches the normal rotative position. Thus the initial part of the forward movement of the crank between the stops and 51 is effected without turning the platen, bu t. the platen is rotated throughout the entire return movement of the crank, with the result already given, of feeding the record-sheet one or more extra line-spaces. At other times in the rotation of the crank the flanged. roll 69 is guided by the inner edge of a fixed ring 69 in which is formed the sloping edge 71. During this initial movement effected by spring 69 the foot 43 engages an. inclined face of the latch, and earns the latter to normal position.
The record-sheet, bill, and interleaved carbon maybe inserted together between the platen 11 and the usual paper shelf. They are then carried around by the usual pressure-rolls (not shown) until the proper blank line upon the bill is brought to the printing-point. T he bill is then written line by line, the ,usual line-spacing devices being employed to advance the sheets until the last line is "written. Thereupon the usual pressureroller release Inchanism may be operated to cast off the rollers, and the bill may then be withdrawn by pulling it up in front of the platen, w hile the record and carbonsheets remain in the machineundisturbed. The pressure-rolls are then permitted to re' turn to normal position, and the operator depresses the crank 23 and-pulls it forwardly as far as it wilLgo.
