No. 846,748. Specification of Letters Patent. v Patented March l2, 1907.
Application tiled December 15,1904. Serial No. 236,947.
To r/,/ /vHmt 'it mfny/conf/:c7711:
` Be it known that LLBERT KLELL, a subject ol the Emperor of Austria, residing at Cleveland, in the county oi' Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have inycnted a new and uselulimprovement in a-Filter, ot' which the foll l l r-ihis invention relates to a 'lilter designed to also bc used when desired as an ice-cooler, in which the ice is held from contact witlrair or with the waterto be filtered.
The object of the invention is a device of this kind in which the parts can be-readily taken apart for cleaning and also in which l the various compartments can be hermetically sealed when .in risc. l
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination oi parts hereinafter described, particularly set out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure ,l a view, partly in Iside elevation and partly in vertical sectionl Fig. 2 is a is a'scction on the line plan view, and Fig. o 5% 3 of Fig. l.
in constructing iny- 'lilter I employ a cylinder A, provided withvertically-arranged side strips or ribs A', which extend below the bottoni of the cylinder' A and form supportinglegs. These ribs A' support a downwardlytlanged bottom A2, secured in place by suit ,Resting on the upper face oi thebottoin A2 is a false, detachable, and upwardly-ilanged bottom A3. A disu charge-pipe A4, haying a suitable valve and faucet A5, provides means lor withdrawing liquid. from the cylinder A. At the bottom and beneath the saine is t carried a feed-pipe C, which is connected to a l plug C', extending through both bottoms A2 and A and which is closed at the top and perforated adjacent its upper ent The pipe C is also provided with a downwardly-open l l l drain-pipe and valve C2.
A top B is provided l'or the cylinder A, and this top is provided with .lugs B', which register with lugs B2, carried by the strips or l ribs A'. A bilurcatcd bracket, U-shaped i and pcri'orated and threaded in the b ow portion, is pivoted to eaclrlug B2 and is adapted to be swung oycrthe registeringing B'. A. setscrew B4 works in the aperture or threaded perforation oi ,the bowl portion oi' eachA bracket B3, and when the brackets are; arranged vertically into clamping engagement with the lugs B2 the set-screw -Bi will engage l ders D and a socket formed .in thc lug B', registering with said lug B2, thus bearing downward on the lug B and on the top B.
Within the cylinder A are arranged concentrically upwardly and downwardly open perforated cylinders D and D', spaced apart, in g material D2. Yithin the cylinder D' and spaced iron). the same is an iinperl'orate cylinder E, which extends above the cylinders D and D" and has -an outwardly-cxtending ilange E' at its upper end. ',lhc-llange E rests above an inwardly-extending llange B5, carried by the top B, and packing material-- for example, a rubber gasket Gfis placed between the two llangcs E' and B5. '.lhc eylin D are beaded at each end, as shown at' D, and rubber packing F F' is arranged at each end of these cylinders, thc top B bearing directly on the packing-ring F.
/inner end portions oi the lugs B are pivoted brackets H, corresponding in construction to the brackets B3, which clamp lugs H', carried by a top J, and set-screws H2 work through the said brackets and bear on the lugs H'. The top`J is iianged and fits within the cylinder E, and a rubber packing ring K is' arranged between the ila-nge E' and the flange J' oi the tog J.
to a water-supply, and the water rises and ills the space between the cylinder and the perforated cylinder D'. L is placed in the c dinde-r E when desired or in winter-time the cylinder E may be removed, and the water percolates through the filtering material D2 vand thronglfthe perforations of the cylinder D into the space between the c linder D and the inner tace oi the cylinder from which nuse the pipe C may be connected direct and between them is arranged suitable iilter- The top B is centrally cut out, and to the I space the iiltercd and cooled water may be withdrawn through the pipe A* and faucet A".
By means oi the packing-rings heretoforeV described the yarious compartments are sealed air and dust tight. vWhile the packing has been glescribed as rubber, other material may be substituted, it tounddesirable.
The cylinders may be of any. suitable metal or other inaterial and ot' any desired size.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. 1. A 'filter comprising an outer4 and an inner imperforate cylinder, perforated cylin-v ders arranged concentrically within the outer brackets, set-screws, and
cylinder, filtering material arranged intermediate the perforated cylinders, means for admitting water within the inner perforated cylindennieans for drawing water from the outer cylinder, Vand mfans for hermetically sealin all of the said cylinders.
2. device of the kind described comprisin concentrically-arranged inner and outer cy inders, concentrically-arranged perforated cylinders,'a top centrally cut out-lugs carried by the outer c linder, lugs carried by the top, pivoted brac ets carried by one set of and adapted t0 engage the lugs of the lorackets packingamaterial arranged between the top and the outer and the perforated cylinders, means :for admitting water to thel inner perforated',cylinder, filtering material between the perforatedr cylinders,
`and a discharge-pipe leading from the outer cylinder.
3. :In a filter comprising a plurality of concentrically-arranged cylinders and filtering material, the linnermost cylinder extending above th'e plane of the top of thc other cylinders,l packing material arranged on the upper ends of the outer cylinders, an outward ly-exe tending flange arranged on the innermost cylinder, a top centrally cut out and having v an inwardly-extending flange adapted to rest luis y ot er set, setscrews working through saidl -below'the ange of the innermost cylinder, said top bearing on the packing material, a packing-ring arranged between the two flanges, a top adapted to iit the cut-out-portion of the top first mentioned, a packingring arranged. on the flange' of the innermost cylinder andl between said. flange and the seconcbmentioned top, and means for clamping each top in position. 4. A filter comprising, an outer imperiorate cylinder and a real and a false bottom, av l rubber ring on the false bottom, perforated cylinders beaded land open at each end ar ranged within the' 'rst-mentioned cylinder and upon the rubber ring, .iiltering material between the perforated cylinders, a rubber* ring arranged on the upper endsof the cylinders, a supply-pipe extending through the' bottom, of theouter cylinder, a dischar e' pipe leading fromone side of 'the outer cylmder, a nonerforate'ice-receptacle arran edl
