' UNITED jsrrrrns --PATENT -oinrreia4 CHARLES GIIERBERT;

Specicationv of Letters Patent' Application mea March zo, i905. sans.; no. 250.900.
`Be it known that I,4 CHARLES G. HERBERT, acitizen -of the United States, residing at Detroit, .county of Wayne, State of Michian, have'invented a certain new and usefull Inprovement in Starting Mechanism for Gas-En `ines; and I declare. the following to be a ful clear, and exact description ofthe same, su'ch as will enable-others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make and use the game, reference being had to the accompany- Ing drawings, which form a part of this spe0i. ication.
' This invention relates to starting mechan-v ism for gas-engines;- and the object of my Improvements 1s' to provide animproved au-V tmatic apparatus for giving the crank-shaft o a vention. Fig. 2 is asimilar view to ig. 1,'a

C' is a clutchering in the sleeve B, secured -thereto-by doWel-p1ns g. Therin' C is provided at its'interiorr surface with evel-sur- D is a steel bushin ntoV the. grooves in the ring C, he against vthe bevel surfaces and vagainst the ushing D', are rollers D. These rollers permit free rotation of the shaft .F relative to sleeve B in the opposite direc.- tion to that of the hands ofa clock, but prey vent a rotation of said sleeve relative to said j cured at O" t0 the rum and the other Vat shaft inthe same direction, Fig. 3.
AA is a spiral sprin one end of which is segasngine an initial motion of rotation. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of an apparatus embodyin `my in shaft, which may bea pro- 'surmuded`- mdf said spring is to tend tojturn thesleeve B in that direction*7 the sleeve' BV being held 'still the action is to wind up the spring A.

The interior of the ring-J is grooved, forming- 6.5
H isa sleeve connected to the bushing I by l* abutting against a shoulder on the sleeve I at end. The springX-actsto press the sleeve H-- *l lcircli-Inference, but is cut awayfor a short Mis a bolt secured u on theperiphery of IOC N is a-latch provided with a tooth ada dted In Iro S is a; nut upon the sleeve B, itsthreadsenf L is a bolt mounted upon the drum O, having one end against the latch N and the other end contacting the sleeve H.
L2 is a yokey upon the drum 0.
T is a spring, one end of which presses against the yoke L2 and the other end against the bolt L and acting to press said bolt in- K is-a ilat cam having a beveled surface at one end, secured at the other end to the nut S, andat the beveled end passing through a slot in the bolt L.
V U is a spring extending outwardfrom the bolt K or nut S and at its outer end en- .gaging in the slotot.
The operation of the above-descr'ibedde- Ivice is as follows: The spring A being supposed to be wound up, the sleeve H is drawn outward, disengaging the teeth H and B. The spring A is ynow acting upon the drum O, tendlng to turn it in one direction, and u on the sleeve B, tending to turn it in the otv er direction. Under` these conditions rotation of the drum O is preventedv by the clutchrollers R, ,and the sleeve B is bound to the shaft F by the rollers D, so that the spring rotates said shaft until the engine commences'to act,- When the ratchet-.teeth II and Bl are disengaged, as above described, the nut S is at the lefthand end of its travel, as shown in. Fig,I 1. When the sleeve H is drawn out, the boltL is forced in front of the lug` h by itsspring T, -thus reventing the spring X frompressing said s eeve inward -to rengage the ratchet-teeth H B. When the sleeveB rotates as above described, the drum Ofand conseruently the nut S, remaining stationary, sai nut is drawn inward, carrying with it the bolt K and pressing the latch Lupwardby means of the cam-surface on K disengaging the sleeve .H and allowing v 1t to move inward under the ressureof the springX to engage the sleeve and revent itsv further-rotation. At the same time the upper yend ofthe bolt L strikes against the latch N, disengaging the bolt M. (See Fig. 2.) When that nut S moves inward, as above described, it carries withit the lower end of the spring V, thus bringing a resilient pressure t rough sald spring upon the bolt M, tending to throw itinto the notch p,
en a in the drum O with the disk P. The g g g disk P .beingF carried bythe shaft F, which-is now being driven bythe engine, causes the drum O t0 rotate, winding up the spring A. The drum O carries with it the nut S, turning the same upon the sleeve B and causing it to move,
beca-use of its engagement with the threads b,
part H, adapted to engage said movable part of said apparatus and be disengaged therefrom, a spring acting to rengage said part when disengaged, a catch adapted to hold said part out of engagement against the action of said spring, and means operated by the relative motion of the parts of said apparatus for releasing said catch to permit it to engage said movable part.
2. In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination of the relatively movable parts B and O, a part'S actuated by the relativev movement of said parts, a lock upon the partI O, a s ring upon .the part S connectedl 'with the bo t of said lock and adapted to -act indifferent directions at the'two ends of thel travel of the part S, a restraining-catch for said lock and means for actuating said catch.
3. The combination of the .shaft F, sleeve B, clutch Ibetween said sleeve and shaft, said sleeve being provided with. screw-threads, drum 0, nut S on saiddrum engaging said screw-threads, a clutch between said drum and a stationary arbor, part H adapted to secure sleeve B from rotation and releasing the same, a bolt Ladapted to prevent the engagement of-part .H with sleeve B, a bolt gage said drum with said shaft, means connecting said nut with each of said bolts so that the movement of said nut shall actuate said bolts, substantially as shown and described. p
In testimony whereof I signl this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
