Be it known that 1, JAMES C. WHITTLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michi an, have invented certain new and useful niprovements in Spring Suspension, of which the following is a spec1' fication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in vehicle-springs; and its obiect'is' to. royide means for so supporting the vehicle ody or frame upon and attaching to the spring that all sudden shocks or jars will as taken up by the spring, and not transmitted to the body, thus preventrng'undne Villfififiitli01@=,frl1d,

It is also an object of the inventionto pro' .B a tubular axle, and C an elliptical spring supported upon the axleand secured thereto by a clip D, all as commonly formed and embodied in automobile construction;
Ordinarily the sill is attached directly to the upper half of the elliptical spring at its center; but in my construction [make no connection at that point whatever between the sill and spring, but instead secure, by means of theordinary clip, a plate 1 to the inner face of said half of the spring,which late is provided With downwardly-extendlng parallel ears 2, between which. are pivoted the levers 3 and 4. Said levers, together with the lovers 5 and 6, which are similarly pivotally attached to a like ear-plate secured by the clip D to the lower hall of the spring, form a toggle connection, between the upper and lower members of said spring, and by forming said levers with forked ends they all lie in the vertical center of the spring. The forked ends of the levers 5 and 6 are extended longitudinally beyond the points of pivoted attachment of the lovers 3 and 4 thereto to form the arms 7, to the ends of which 'armsthe hangers 8 are pivotallylattached. Having thus fully described my invention, what i claim is- 1.. The combination with an elliptical spring; of levers pivotally attached to the members of said spring to form a double toggle connection between said members; hangers pivotally attached to said levers near their connecting-pivots and formed with spring-seats at their free ends; socket members adapted to be attached to a sill, coiled springs in said socket members engaging the seats on the hangers; and studs on the said seats extending upward within the socket members inside said springs.
5. In combination with the sill, an elliptical spring, a pair of levers each pivoted to one member of saidspring, a second pair of levers pivoted to the other member of said spring and to said lust-named levers, and
an elliptical 1 spring and a sill, a toggle connection between the members of said sprin an arm extended angularly from said togg e connection, and
compressible means supported from said arm and engaging said sill.
7. In combination with an elliptical spring and a sill, toggle-levers connected to each'of the halves of said spring, and verticallyi-disposed compressible .means pivotally supported at one end from the connecting-point between 'said levers and, at the opposite end pivoted to said sill. I
8. In combination with an elliptical spring and a sill, a toggle connection attached thereto, a hanger supported from said connection, a spring on said hanger, and a socket member supported'from. said sill and receiving said spring.
9. In combination with an elliptical spring and a sill, a pair of levers pivoted together at one end and at their opposite ends pivoted to the halves of said spring, and a hanger supported from the pivotal point between said levers and having an offset part underlying said sill and compressible means between said sill and offset part of the hanger.
10. In combination with an elliptical spring and a sill arranged side by side, a movable connection between the halves of said spring, a supporting means movably related to said connection and underlying said sill, and compressible means between said sill and said supporting means.
