JOHN JULIEN, CHRIS'TIANSBURG, ASSIGNOR 'IO HIMSELF AND i JOHN F. HORR, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
Lenen Parmi No. 83,287, dated october 2o, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKET.
v The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofv the same.
To all whom it conce/rn Be it known that I, JOHN JULIEN, of Ohristiansburg,
in the county of Champaign, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in W'hip-Sock ets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, lclear, and exact description of the same,- reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View;
Figure 2 is a horizontal section; and
Figure 3 an elevation and section.
The same-letters `are employed in all the iigures in the indication of identical parts. l v
A is the socket, of the ordinary size, and made of any suitable material.
Around the socket., near `'the top thereof, there is a projection, A', in which is placed the chain C, the links of which are formed as shown in iig. 2.
A semicircular piece, G, is attached to the chain C, and carried through an opening made in the side of the enlargement A', and turned outwards on the end,
as shown. Y
The links of the chain .O are attached to a thin spring, O2.
The lower edge of the semicircular piece G is notched like a ratchet-wheel.
, witnesses. y f
D is the lock.
The bolt D` is pressed forward by a spring, and the end thereof is bevelled on one side, so that when the whip is placed in the socket, the end of the semicircular piece Cl being drawn' out, thechain will be drawn closely around the handle, above the'ferrule, the notches will,
presenting their inclined faces to the inclined face of the bolt, slide over the same, and the bolt will hold the parts in that position until the key is introduced and turned, when the bolt D', being disengaged, the tension of the spring O2 Will draw back the chain and piece O1, and permit the whip to be withdrawn from the socket.
What I claim as my invention-,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- A whip-socket, constructed with a lock, D, having a spring-bolt, D', and exible chain C, notched curved piece C, and spring G2, arranged to operate in combination, substantially as set forth In testimony whereof, I have signed my name fto this specification in the presence of two subscribing JOHN JULIEN.
