ttes sAM E L HoK-E. or MOUN T PL E'ASANT, MARYLAND. Letters Patent No. 83,282, dated October 20, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEYS.
Theschedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it mq/y concern: 7
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Hone, of Mount Pleasant township, Frederick county, and State of'Maryland,
have invented an Improvement in Chimneys-Self- Cleaner, and I hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referenceinarked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the chim ney.
Figure 3 represents a section of the wire cleaner, as .connected with another section, at each joint of the chimney.
Figure 4=represents a cross-beam at each joint of the chimney, with a centreaperture, as a guide for the.
central rod or pivot of each section of the cleaner.
Figure 5 is an under-side view of the chimney.
Figure 6 represents the movable radiator, located above the fire-place. I
Thenature of my invention consists in the construction of an iron chimney, with a self-acting cleaner, operated by means of the vane .at top, the cleaner being formed of stout wire, and supported by cross-pieces as guides, with central apertures for the cleaner to revolve in, there being a section of cleaner at each-section of the chimney; the chimney having a revolving reel orthrough the pipes E E,-that may be attached and lead to any roolns or chambers above, so as to carry up the heat and heat the upper rooms.
, When a cooking-stove is used, all the steam, smell, 850., of the cooking are carried off through the oblong Figure 2 represents a vertical section or the same.
aperture F into the chimney D, the outside pipes, E E, having been closed. The soot thatl'alls down the chimney can becleaned out, by removing the radiator B, at any time, or can be taken-out at the door G. The radiator, B, is a circular plate, with the two apertures, G
and F, and rests upon a circular ledge at the lower partof the chimney, above the fire-place, and is inserted or removed at any time, by being taken out edgewise, through the slots J J of the ledge H. The body of the chimney isformed of cast-iron tubes, each about sigr feet in length, having a shoulder at each joint for the upper tube to rest in, and at each joint are crossbeams K, of bar-iron, permanently set into the shoulders of the tube, having a centre aperture, in which the central rod or pivots, L, of the square cleaners, M, operate and are guided. The rod L has a square joint above each cross-piece K, so as to revolve each section of the cleantures at one side of the reel, opposite to the. direction of the wind, to prevent thechimneyfrom smoking, and regulate the draught.
The pipe-holeR-isfor thepurpose of insertingapipe into the chimney from a stove on the outside.
What I claim as' my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination'of the self-acting cleaners M with the guides K, when constructed with and operated by means of the vane N, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. Also, aniron tubular chimney, in" sections, with a fire-place A, radiator B, reel 1?, cleaners M, and vane N, when constructed, combined, and operated ashorein described, and for the purposes set forth.
