Description

"To all whom it may concern aunt saw IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRIcA'roRs Pen STEAM-ENGINES.
0 The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makifig p rt o he amfl- Be it known that I, G-nonen Grnrr, of Rainier, in the county of Columbia, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Lubricating-Device for Steam-Cylinders; and I do hereby declare that the following is 'a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, formingpart of this specification, in which the drawing represents a vertical central section of my invention.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for lubricating steam-cylinders, and it consists of a-novel arrangement of valves',.oil-chamber, and lever, as hereinafter shown and described, whereby several advantages are obtained, as herein set forth.
A represents an oil-receiver, which "is provided with a pendent pipe, B, the latter extending down through a stufiing-box, G, into an oil-chamber, I);
This oil-chamber is screwed on the upper end of a pipe, E, the lower end of the latter being screwed into the steam-cylinder shown in red.
11 is a lever, formedwith a yoke, G,throughflwhich *the pipe B passes, the latter being secured in theyoke by a pin, a. v
The fulcrum b of the lever F is an arm, 0, attached tothe outer side of the'oil-chamber, and a springcatch, H, is-also attached to the exterior of the oilchamber, to hold the lever F down when necessary.
. e I representsa valve, which is attached to the lower end of a stem, J, which. passes up, through the pipe E, into the oil-chamber I), andis connected, by a coupling, d, with the stem K-of a valve, L.
When the lever F is held down by the spring-catch I H, the valve L closes the lower end of the pipe B, but
the valve I is open, so that any oil in D may descend through pipe E into the cylinder.
Whenever it is necessary to replenish D with oil, the catch H is shoved to one side of the lever F, and the valve I is instantly raised and closed under the pressure of the steam, and the lever F is then raised a trifle by hand, so that the pipe B will be raised from valve L, and the steam in B at once escapes, and D supplied with oil, by pouringtthe latter into A.
By thus depressing lever F, and securing it by catch H, the pipe B is closed on valveL, valve I opened, and oil from D allowed to pass into the cylinder.
A stop or pin, e, which passes through the stem J, limits the descent of the valve 1.
The superiority of this invention consists in the fact that there are no plugs to get out of order, or injnred or cut'by sand, a contingency of common occurrence with the ordinary lnbricators. The device may also .be more readily supplied with oil than other devices for the same purpose.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The two valves L I, pipes B E, oil-chamber D, and lever F, all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth. GEORGE GIRTY. Witnesses:
