To aZl whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN D. TAYLOR, of Buffalo, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Switching Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to railway switching apparatus, and more particularly to such apparatus where electric energy is employed to move and lock the switch and also, according to my previous inventions hereinafter re ferred to, to give dynamic indication of the complete movement and locking of the switch.
My invention is therefore an improvement upon my former inventions shown in Patents No. 605,359, reissued No. 11,983, May 6, 1902, and No. 707,181, August 19, 1902.
The object of my invention is to prevent a false indication; and it consists of what I term an indication-selector.
Referring to the drawing herewith, consisting of a diagram of the circuits, B is a rail switch. 1 2 represent the motor for moving the rail-switch. 3 4 5 6 7 S is a pole-cha'nging switch; 50, a source of energy; 19 20, the brushes of the controller; 29, the indicationmagnet, and the safety-magnet, all fully described in my said former patents. 31. and 32 are the indication selectormagnets, and 15 is a tongue acting as an armature and gov erned by said magnets to make electrical connection with the contacts 36 or 37, as the case may be, and so arranged as to remain in electrical connection with contact 36 or 37 after current has been cut off and until a magnet (31 or 32, as the case may be) has been energized to draw said tongue against the opposite contact.
To explain the operation, I will trace the circuits, first showing a normal movement and then showing a false indication due to the kick of the rail-switch, and thus eX- plain how my invention prevents a false indication which might otherwise occur.
When it is desired to move the switch B to give access to the siding, the controller is moved to put the brushes 19 and 20 in electrical connection with the contacts 16 and 17 and 22 and 23, respectively. This closes a circuit of the battery 50, so that current flows through wires 33, safety-magnet 30, wires 37 27, selector-magnet 31, wire 25, conarm 4 makes electrical connection with the contact 6. In the meantime this current has energized the magnet 31, and this magnet has moved the tongue 15 out of electrical connection with the contact 37 and into electrical connection with the contact 36. The continued rotation of the motor-armature 1, due to momentum, generates current for dynamic indication, as described in my said former patents, which flows from armature 1 to wire 10, switch-arm 3, contact 5, wire 14, contact 22, brush 20, contact 23, wire 26, contact 36, tongue 15, wire 38, indication-magnet 29, wires 34 57 35 13, field-coils 2, wire 11, contact 6, switcharm 4, and wire 9 back to motor-armature 1. This gives the proper indication that the switch is home and locked. Now suppose the rail-switch is set for the siding and the operator desires to set it for the main track. In that condition the polechanging switch. will have the arms 3 and 4 in electrical connection with the contacts 5 and 6, respectively. The operator now moves the controller so that the brush 20 makes electrical connection between the contacts 22 and 39. Current then flows from the battery 50 through wires 45 33, 30, wires 37 28, magnet 32, wire 21, contact 39, brush 20, contact 22, wire 14, contact 5, switch-arm 3, wire 10, motor-armature 1, wire 9, switch-arm 4, contact 6, wire 11, field-coils 2, wires 13 35 back to battery 50. This causes movement of the rail-switch toward the position for the main track; but
Having thus described my invention and its method of operation, what I claim is 1. In combination with a source of energy, a motor, operating and indicating circuits, a controller, a pole-changing switch, an electro magnetic indication-selector comprising magnets in the branches of the operating-wire, a tongue in the indicating common governed by said magnets, a motor, an indication-magnet, a pole-changing switch governed by the relay-switch, whereby the operating-current through one of saidv selector-magnets closes the indicating common with the proper branch of the indicating-wire, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with a source of energy, a motor, a circuit-breaking or pole-changing device actuated. by said motor, operating and indication circuits, an electric switch for making suitable connections between said source of energy and said indicating and operating circuits, an electromagnetic device actuated or controlled by the operating-current, whereby the normal indication is closed when said electric switch is moved normal, and whereby the reverse indication-circuit is closed when said electric switch. is moved to reverse position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. I11 combination with a source ofenergy, a motor, a controller, a wire leading from one pole of said source of energy to said motor, a wire leading from the opposite pole of said source of energy to the opposite pole of said motor, a pole-changing switch for reversing the electrical connections with said motor, a controller in said circuits, an ind.icationcir cuit, an electromagnetic switch energized through the operating-circuit to establish. the proper indication-circuit on each movement of said controller and prior to the dynamic indication from said motor, substantially as and for the pur oses set forth.
