Be it known that I, DANIEL AsHwoRTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vappingers Falls, in the county of Dutchhave invented a new and useful Mechanical Movement, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this present invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form, and arrangement of the several parts of a mechanical movement whereby a very simple and easily-controlled mechanism is produced for driving a rotary part in either direction at pleasure.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the mechanism in side elevation, the parts being arranged in position to impart a rotary motion to the drivedrum in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the mechanism. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken in the plane of the line A A of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the two driving parts in the position which they assumewhen the drum is being driven in the reverse direction. Fig. 5 is a detail view, in side elevation, of one of the split rings and its clamping-arm, the ring being shown in its closed or driving position. The bed-plate of a suitable frame for supporting my improved mechanism is denoted by 1 and its legs by 2. A rock-lever 3 is pivoted at 4 in brackets 5, depending from the bed-plate 1 of the frame. provided with a longitudinally-adjustable slide 7 is located, which slide may be held in its different adjustments by suitable means-such, for instance, as a set-screw 7 A reciprocating rocking motion may be imparted to the lever 3 from any suitable source of power through a rod 8.
The shaft which carries the drum 11, to
which it is intended to impart a variable rotary motion in either direction, is 9, and it is mounted in suitable bearings 10 in the bed-plate 1 of the frame. Two double arms 12 and 13 have their ends loosely mounted on the shaft 9 upon opposite sides of the drum 11 and extend in opposite directions from the said shaft. An oscillating movement is imparted to these arms 12 and 13 denoted by This lever'3 isa vertical channel 6, in which from the rock-lever3 by means of rods 14 15,
the corresponding inner ends of the said rods being connected to the vertical adjustable slide 7 at the same point and the corresponding outer ends of the rods being connected the one to the double arm 12 and the other to the double arm 13 at equal distances from the shaft 9. It will thus be seen that as the point of attachment of these arms 14 and 15 to the'slide 7 is adjusted toward and away from the pivotal connection 4 of the rock-lever 3 the double arms 12 and 13 are oscillated to a greater or lesser degree. Each of these arms is provided with a reversible clutch device which forms the subject-matter of my present invention, which device is constructed, arranged, and operated as follows: A split ring 16 surrounds the drum 11 and has one of its ends pivoted at 17 to a clampingarm 18 and its other end pivoted at 19 to the said clamping-arm. This split ring is of spring material and tends to close around the drum. The clamping-arm is provided with a longitudinal recess 20, in which a stud 21 is located, the said stud being carried by a tr ansversely-sliding shifting-rod 22, mounted in the double arm 12 in proximity to the periphery of the drum 11. This rod 22 is fixed to the free end of an arm 23, loosely mounted on a sleeve 24, which in turn is loosely mounted on the shaft 9. A split ring 25 also surrounds the drum 11 and has its free ends pivoted at 26 27 to a clamping-arm 28, which has a longitudinal recess 29, in which a roller 30, carried by a transversely-sliding shifting-rod 31, is located. This rod 31 is mounted in the double arm 13 and is secured to the free end of an arm 32, which is loosely pivoted on the sleeve 24. The sleeve 24 and thereby the arms 23 32 and their rods 22 31 are shifted along the shaft 9, so as to bring the studs 21 and 30 to the one or the other side of the connections of the clamping- arms 18 and 28, with their respective split rings 16 and 25. This means in the present instance comprises a shifting-lever 33, pivoted at 34 on the bed-plate 1 and having one of its arms arranged to travel in a circumferential groove 35 in the sleeve 24.
When the studs 21 and 30 of the shiftingrods 22 and 31 are to one side of their respective split rings, the rings will be clamped into engagement with the drum 11 when the arms 12 and 13 are moved in one direction and released from the drum when the arms are moved in the opposite direction. drive the drum in one direction. If it is desired to reverse the direction of the drum 11, the studs 21 and 30, carried by the rods 22 and 31, are shifted to the other side of their respective split rings. As the arms 12 and 13 are oppositely disposed and the connectingrods 14 and 15 are attached to the adjustable slide 7 at the same side of the pivotal connection of the rocl lever 13 with the bed-plate, the rocking movement of the lever 3 will oscillate the arms 12 and 13 in opposite directions, thus causing one of the split rings to be in driving engagement with the drum while the other split ring is released therefrom. This arrangement will give a constant drive in predetermined directions to the drum 11, and thereby the shaft 9. It will be seen that the direction of the drive may be instantly reversed by shifting the sleeve 24. Furthermore, it will be understood that the movement of the arms 12 and 13 maybe accurately determined by adjusting the slide 7 within the lever 3, so as to bring the connection of the rods 14 and 15 with the slide a greater or lesser distance from the pivotal connection with the bed-plate.
What I claim is- 1. In a mechanical movement, a shaft, a drum carried thereby and a clutch device comprising a clamping-arm, a split ring surrounding the drum and having its ends pivoted to the clamping-arm, an arm loosely mounted on the shaft, a rod carried thereby in engagement with the'clampingerm at one side of the pivotal connection between the clamping-arm and ends of the split ring.
2. In a mechanical movement, a shaft, a drum carried thereby and a clutch device comprising a clamping-arm, a split ring surrounding' the drum and having` its ends pivoted to the clamping-arm, an arm loosely mounted on the shaft, a shifting-rod carried thereby and means for bringing the shiftingrod into engagement with the clamping-arm upon one or the other side of the pivotal connection between the clamping-arm and the ends of the split ring. l
3. In a mechanical movement, a shaft, a drum carried thereby and a clutch device comprising a clamping-arm, a split ring surrounding the Vdrum and having its ends pivoted to the clamping-arm, an arm loosely mounted onthe shaft, a shifting-rod carried thereby, said clamping-arm having a longi ,tudinal recess therein and said shifting-rod having a stud located in said recess and means for shifting the stud to one sideor the other of the pivotal connection between the clam ing-arm and the ends of the split ring.
4. n a mechanical movement, a shaft, a drum carried thereby and a clutch device comprising a clamping-arm, a split ring surrounding the drum and having its ends pivoted to the clamping-arm, an arm loosely mounted on the shaft, a shifting-rod carried oted to the clamping-arm, an arm loosely mounted on the shaft, a shifting-rod carried thereby arranged to be brought into engagement with the clampingarm upon one or the other side of its pivotal connection with the ends of the split ring, a laterally-sliding sleeve loosely mounted on the shaft and an arm loosely mounted on the sleeve secured to said shifting-rod- 6. In a mechanical movement, a shaft, a drum carried thereby and a clutch device comprising two `clamping -arms, two split rings surrounding the drum, each ring having its ends pivoted to one of the clamping-arms, oppositely-arranged arms loosely mounted on the shaft, a shifting-rod carried by each arm arranged to be brought into engagement with its clamping-arm upon one or the other side of the pivotal connection between the clamping-arm and the ends of the split ring.
7. In a mechanical movement, a shaft, a drum 4carried thereby and la yclutch dev-ice comprising 'two clamping-arms, two split rings surrounding the drum, each ring having its ends pivoted to one of the clamping-arms, oppositely-arranged arms loosely mounted on the shaft, a shifting-rod carried by each arm arranged to be brought in-to engagement with its clamping-arm upon `one or the other side of the pivotal 1connection between the clamping-arm and the ends yof the split ring, and means `for oscillating the s'aid oppositely-arranged arms.
8. In a mechanical movement, a shaft, a drum carried thereby and a clutch dev-ice comprising two lclamping-arms, two split rings surrounding thedrum, each ring having its ends pivoted to one of the clamping-arms, oppositely-arranged arms loosely mounted on the shaft, shifting-rods carried thereby, a sleeve loosely mounted lon the shaft, arms loosely mounted on the sleeve secured to said shifting-rods and means for sliding the sleeve for shifting the said rods into engagement with their respective Iclampingarms upon one or the other side of the pivotal connections between the clamping-arms and the ends of the spring-rings- 9.
