IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that I, OBADLAH LOVE, of Saxenburg', inthe county of Butler, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making ,a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of my fence. Figure 2 is a similar view, showing the manner in which it may be employed for the shelter of sheep and other animals.

VThe object of this invention is to obtain a neat, light,

cheap, and portable wooden fence, the materials for which, in the proper condition to apply directly to the manufacture of the fence, are abundant in every part of the country. p

In the drawings A A represent the rails employed in the construction of my fence, being simply slats of board or plank, of any suitable length, and from three to six inches in width, and having notches or gains a a cut across their edges, near each end, to form a lock by which to connect the several panels.

These rails are supported by a single post, B, in thecentre of each panel,and bya single one, or one each side, at the ends of the panels, as shown' at G O. The panels are then interlocked, as shownin g. 1.

The fence, as thus far constructed, would form a very neat and cheap fence where it stands on level ground, and is to be subjected to little strain. But when employed on ahill-side, or where it is likely to be rubbed atglaliti'ist by cattle, Ior otherwise interfered with, it needs panels will become detached` from each other, and the fence be rendered. useless. I accordingly attach to the top land bottom of the fence, at one end of each panel, a hasp, D, and in a similar position at the other end of the panel, a staple or eye, E, and besides interher strengthening and connecting, or the locking the gains a a, I hasp the ends of the panels together, as shown. By this means the panels are strongly attached together, while they can be readily taken apart, if desired.

The panels of a fence thus constructed cannot become disconnected by the settling of the fence, or by any ordinary accident to it. The fence. will last for years, on a hill-side as Well as on a plain. It can readily be takenup and transported from one part of the farm to another when necessary. Whena temporary shelter for sheep and other animals is desired, as is often'the case in winter, it can be constructed of the panels by doubling them and interlocking their ends, as seen in g. 2, or, in other words, by setting up'two panels so as to form a /\roof, and employing two other panels superimposed upon it, to hatten it.-

I do not claim broadly a fence having the ends of the rails interlocked, by means of the notches a a neither do I claim broadly afence, the panels of which are attached together by hasps neither of these, alone, produces the results desired, but both combined are necessary, in order to give firmness to the joints, and to connect the panels together, so that they shall not be easily separated by accidental causes.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- The fence above described, consisting essentially of the rails A A, posts B C, hasps, D D, and staples E E, all said parts being constructed and combined together in the manner and for the purposes set-forth.
