BOX-FFASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1.9.(.6.
Application tiled May 16,1905. Serial No. 260.729.
To @ZZ whom it 1mm/"concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN ANDERSON, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of my invention is to provide a locking device for covers of boxes adapted to contain bottled goods of all kinds to the end that the use of all hinges and pivots permanently connecting the cover and the box may be avoided.
A further object is to provide a removable cover that can be easily and quickly secured on the box without being accurately fitted thereon each time the box is closed.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the upper portion of a box and cover with my invention applied thereto, the locking device being shown in its open` posi tion. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the locking device in its closed position. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the interior of the box, showing the socket in one end wall and the hook device which extends down through the cover and engages said socket. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the locking device at the opposite end of the box from the one shown in Fig. 3 looking from the under side. Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan 'view of the locking device. Fig. 6 is an end view of the same.
In the drawings, 2 represents a box or case of the kind usually 4used in packing bottled goods for transportation, having a cover 3. Two of the opposite walls of the box are provided on the inside with recesses 4, over which plates 5 are secured, having holes 6 coinciding with said recesses. These sockets are substantially the same on both walls of the box. A plate 7 is secured to the under v-=ide of the cover near one edge and is provided with a depending lug '8, that is adapted to enter one of the recesses in the box-wall, as indicated in Fig. 1. Near the other edge of the box-cover I provide an opening 9, over which a plate 10 is secured on the top ofthe box and having a hole 11 coinciding with the hole 9 in the cover. A strap 12 is hinged at 13 on the plate 10 and is adapted to be swung down upon said plate, and a hook 14 is punched out ofthe strap 12 and projects down through the holes 9 and 11 and is adapted to enter the recess in the wall of the box. A lug 15 is formed on the plate 10 and projects above the same in the path of an angled *projection 16, provided on the free end of the strap 12. This projection has an eyelet-liole 17, that coincides with a similar hole in the lug 15 when the strap is turned down to ahorizontal position. The strap and plate are then secured together by means of a wire or other suitable device and sealed, and it will then be impossible to open the cover until the seal has been broken or removed. The recess in the walls of the box being the same on both sides, it will be immaterial how the cover is placed thereon, as the lug S and the hook 14 will enter either recess and allow the cover to be easily and quickly secured without any fitting.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a box having sockets or recesses on its inside near the top, of a cover provided with a lug on its under side near one edge adapted to enter one of said recesses, a plate secured on said cover near its opposite edge and having a hole coinciding with a hole in said cover, a strap hinged on said plate and provided with an integral hook depending through said holes and adapted to enter said other recess, and means Jfor securing said hinged strap on said plate, and said hook being located on said strap between its hinge and said securing means substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a box provided with sockets or recesses in its walls on the inside near the top of the box, of a removable cover `having a depending lug on its under side adapted to enter one of said recesses, a strap mounted on said cover on its upper side and having a depending integral hook projecting through a hole in said cover and adapted to enter said other recess when the cover is closed, and said strap having an eyelet-hole at one end adapted to coincide with a similar eyelet-hole provided. on a lug on said cover and through which holes a wire for a seal may be inserted, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a box having a recess in its wall on the inside near the top, of a cover having a hole near said recess, a strap hinged on said cover and having an integral hook intermediate to its ends adapted to pass through said hole and enter said recess when the cover is placed on the box.

4. The combination With a box ha ving sockets in its inside Walls, of a co ver having a lug on its under side adapted to lenter one of said sockets, a plate secured to said cover and having a hole coinciding with a hole through said cover near said other socketand a strap` mounted on said plate and having an integral hook intermediate to its ends dependingy plate and the holeinA through the hole in said Said cover to enter said other socket, and
substantially as described.
5. The combination with a box havingv strap on said cover, substantially as de'- scribed.
6. The combination, With a box, having a recess in its Wall on the inside, of a cover having a hole near said recess, a strap mounted on said cover and having an integral hook adapted to pass through said hole and enter said recess, and means for locking said strap Aon said cover, substantially as described.
7. The combination, with a box, having a recess in its Walll on the inside, of a cover hav- V.ing avhole near said recess, a plate provided over said hole, a strap mounted on said plate and having an integral hook intermediate to its ends adapted to pass through a hole therein and through the hole in said cover and enter said reces'sWhen the cover is placed 0n the box, and means for locking said strap on said plate.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of April, 1905.
